228 - lucky chinese numbers πŸ”’πŸ§§

Hey there, !

numbers

Did you know that '228' is a really fun number in Cantonese?

'2' = 'yi' = sounds like 'easy'

'8' = 'baat' ~= 'faat' = fortune

So 228, means EASY FORTUNE!

Cantonese people love to use homophones / homonyms (I don't recall which one is the right one), so I thought it would be fun to decode some of them! (Some are also Mandarin but they love anything that has rhyming so let's go through).

'1314' = 'yut sam yut sei' = for life and for the world...which essentially means 'forever'. Usually used in a romantic context!

'520' (mandarin) = 'wu er ling' ~= 'wo ai ni' = I love you! how cute.

'168' = 'yut luk baat' ~= 'yut lo faat' = continuously gain fortune

'138' = 'yut saam baat' ~= 'yut saang faat' = continuously grow your fortune (the 3 kinda sounds like 'grow' so we love these numbers)

'7788' = is actually just a Cantonese idiom which means you're nearly there but not completed yet (cos you're not at 10). It's kind of like being at 70-80% complete hahaha.

Short one this week - I'm a busy boi on a long weekend :D

βœ”οΈReal Life Recommendations

  1. Poor Things - I mean, you have to watch this before the Oscars for some insanely good acting from Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe. They inhabit this batshit crazy characters and go through a gorgeously designed and produced world - some of the shots I was amazed at how the lenses were making backgrounds look weird and wonderful. HOWEVER do not even try to work out the story or care about where it's going - that's not the point. Even for Yorgos Lanthimos (who did The Lobster and The Favourite) this is some wack-ass shit. Recommended so that you can snobbily talk about the Oscars when Emma Stone wins Best Actress because DAYUM girl.

  2. Mr Lees Foods - a super humble Korean eatery in Ringwood that has like...10 things on the menu and they're all in Korean. I loved this place because of how small and homely it was - everything they served seemed homemade rather than restaurant quality (which in this case was a big plus). I had this moment of being like 'wow it's so different to me that it MUST be good'. Highly recommended!

  1. Autogenerating a Book Series From Three Years of iMessages | Ben Kettle - I wonder what my texts would look like in a book form! or even this newsletter - I should really look back into that idea :D

  2. The women who coined the expression 'Surfing the Internet' - I mean, did you ever think about this? A fun little story!

  3. Bioluminescent petunias now available for U.S. market - this looks HELLA cool.
