I made CHEONG because of this dude johnnykyunghwo on TikTok / YouTube / Reels. It looked hella easy (you mix fruit with an equal weight of sugar) and the syrup that it creates should be deLISH. Traditionally it's made with unripe green plums from korea, but the technique can be used with any fruits (apparently). I realise that it's just going to be like...sugary water, but that's fine - I can use it as syrup or as a mixer (I even bought a cocktail book to try and find ways that I can use the syrup into cocktails)...I haven't tried it yet - it's been just over a month - but I'm going to try it with sparkling water, tonic water, infuse some of it with vodka - the works! See below - I just gotta wait for the rest of the sugar to dissolve and it'll be ready to drain and use :)

For the friendsmas bad santa I got a hydroponics system that I'm trying to grow lettuce and basil in. I feel like it's the right kind of nerdy gardening stuff that I want because it uses so little space, much less resources (other than water), and is kinda nifty. Apparently it just keeps growing and growing and growing so I am hella excited to get some harvesting done. And also work out what to eat basil with...
Look at this! This is like 4 days worth of growth and we got some cute li'l seedlings!

During the Black Friday sales, I saw a mini projector on sale for like $70, and I was like 'sure why not'. I saw this amazing video on insta or tiktok or something and I was so impressed and though this one looked REALLY complex the outcome was freakin' COOL. It's called projection mapping - a way to project photos and videos on to real life objects but allowing it to like...conform to the shape. Here's a silly little experiment I did using a video from my Taiwan travels - it's projecting onto an angled tissue box (I didn't have anything else handy), but you can split it up into multiple frames if you need to; I want to try and do this with frames on my wall so we'll see how we go with that!

Red Emperor - slightly weirder recommendation but...it's a Chinese restaurant. In the city. Which I thought would be just be so-so, but it reminded me of all the service you'd expect from a place like this - hot hand towels, being served last (because girls get served first, then in order from oldest to youngest), the waiter bantering kinda mean but kinda fun, and it being just a little bit dirty (the fish tanks were hella algae'd up). HOWEVER the food was really good and in good quantity - at least, for the banquet. So...yeah. A nice lil food recommend :D

To Be Frank bakery - recommended by Rach - a really lovely bakery in Collingwood that sold boxes of Ted Lasso shortbread (! which is surely a gimmick but still very cute) and some lovely pastries. They also gave us a fougasse to "please leave" so SCORE. Highly recommended!

Musings on first week of parenthood - a good friend of mine (Hu!) just had a cute bebe and wrote some thoughts on what would have helped. If you're getting to that lifestage, this was a really nice piece to read!

My Toddler Loves Planes, So I Built Her A Radar - another cute breakdown of the build for a piece of software for a toddler, and how to adapt to simple use cases. And how cool does it look!

Staring into the abyss as a core life skill - and for something a bit different, an argument that being able to face into the hard things makes your life better. Grapple with hard, important things because that's how you grow as a person.
