194 - Vince's Life Update ๐๐ผ๏ธ
Geez it takes so much longer to get to Life Updates every 4 weeks - I don't know why! I think I need some more headspace to think about some fun topics :D Or more good conversations? Who knows...
Anyway.
Hey there, !
It's felt like a while since I've done this, for some reason. I think the last time was because it was my 30th, and now I'm back to more normal programming!

I've finally hung some of the boardgame art that I had bought a while back: pictures below! It took a lot to actually realise that a. the frames were the wrong colour, b. the art kept falling down, c. the measuring to make sure they were all aligned (thanks PowerPoint) - but now I've done it once I CAN DO IT AGAIN ๐ฆพ

I'm doing some planning for the UK/US tour in September. Would love some recommendations for London and Austria if you have any - especially good food and places to go! The itinerary is packed already - so much to do and so little time to do it!
-
I'm reading Thinking in Bets and I tried my best to get through Song of Achilles which was REALLY GOOD and reminded me of Heroes and Mythos written by Stephen Fry - it really felt like I was back in Ancient Greece - but I had to return it to the library before I could finish it :( I'll get back round to it! Thinking in Bets is a classic decision making book based on a behavioural scientist who had a background in poker - so we are loving it every which way!

I'm finally getting into vinyls and I feel like I'm like...years behind. I mean, sure, literally I'm years behind but I set up my dad's old record player set up and it's really fun to work in that vibe and ambience to a room. I definitely worked out why we don't really have record players any more (I mean, getting up every 20-30mins to go turn over the record, the scratchy and sometimes dynamic variations) - but I still really like it. Going to stores and finding some cool old albums that I like - just so nice. I got one of my fave Mariah Carey albums (Live at MTV Unplugged), a Nat King Cole, and some lovely classical music too - Yehudi Menuhin playing some wonderful violin concertos below!

I have deleted reddit off my phone and tried to start moving across to lemmy which is the decentralised version of it. It's interesting; because of the move, the social network vibes aren't there yet, so it's really small, which also makes it kinda boring. That's a good thing though, because I waste less time there! Twitter putting rate limits as well - AMAZING thank you reddit and Twitter for making strong mental health decisions for the world <3 You suck at running businesses but that's fine I like my mental health :D I might write something specifically about this - where you're waiting for a forcing function to change your behaviour!
Anyway - I didn't 3D print anything (if you were wondering from the last Life Update) but I've been having a wonderful time feeling more and more settled at home. It's nice to enjoy your space - I slowed down a bit in terms of changes and acquisitions in the house, but it's just a nice little project to work on - chipping away here and there at the things I need to do.
For next time, I'm looking forward to Barbie+Oppenheimer day, a friend's wedding and some more fried chicken - hoping to try El Jannah soon!

Marrybrown Fried Chicken - a fried chicken chain from Malaysia that has come to Burwood, they also sell fried chicken with nasi lemak and other classic Malaysian dishes. I got a 2 piece + 1 piece of chicken, the chips and some extra onion rings; quick review - the chicken was some of the best, fresh chicken I've eaten, but the skin / batter is not as crispy or flavorful as you would expect. It doesn't have those fissures and cracks that provide satisfying crunch (or at least, not as many as you'd want). I still recommend it because why not - it's new, it's different - the wait at the moment is pretty intense, but worth going to.
-
Lunar by Hikari - highly instagrammable, cute cafe spot tucked away in Brunswick on Sydney Rd recommended by my friend Mish; selling Japanese classics like onigiri and unagi dons - we had some fantastic shokupan on the side as well. It was a really nice vibe - very minimalistic, the lighting highlights the food on the table, and it's just simple and nice and vibey. Highly recommended!

Mechanical Apple Watch From Real E-Waste Apple Watch - so cool! A bit impractical, but it looks like a fun project. Add it to the pile of things Vince wants to do...that interminable list.

Are You Ever Really As Close To University Friends As The Ones Youโve Known Since Childhood? - thank you Bev for the link - a really interesting article and discussion to be had! I don't think I have kept touch with a lot of my childhood friends - I don't think anyone from pre-high school really reads this...but it would be interesting to see who I would become if I hung out with them again?

Common diabetes drug shown to prevent long COVID | CIDRAP - a course of metformin for 2 weeks helps to prevent long COVID? Fascinating!
