183 - A Melbourne Chicken Itinerary πππ
Hey there, !
What if… I needed to introduce someone to the wonder that is chicken (not just fried chicken!) through a number of restaurants in Melbourne, and only had a day to do so? Where would I go / what would I get?
Disclaimers:
-
I haven’t actually done this yet, it’s a hypothetical itinerary to hit up a bunch of chicken places that I like. I tried to make it as realistic as possible but stomachs may vary
-
I’m sure there are lots of places that I haven’t tried yet, so I’ll add to this in the future
-
No fried chicken burger places here because the focus is on fried chicken by itself
-
This assumes an itinerary of about 4 people because of the amount of food to eat, but can swing up and down dependent on appetite of the party
Start: at my house in Doncaster, 9:30AM
Travel 5 mins - parking + getting to the place for about 10 mins
Stop 1: 9:45AM - 10:30AM - Local Hero Singapore and Nene Chicken
- Dish: Hainanese Chicken Rice (but we would focus on the chicken rather than the rice since there’s a bunch of stuff to eat for the rest of the day). At the food court, we would also hit up Nene Chicken for a quick 6 wings box so that we could try out some korean fried chicken including some flavours like Snowing Vegetable and Spicy Sweet or even Soy Garlic. New and fun flavours!
Stop 3: 10:30AM - 11AM - Secret Kitchen
- Dish: Chicken Feet sorry Phoenix Claws - because they’re so damn good, the collagen is fantastic for your skin, and the sauce is DIVINE. May also pick up a few har gao and egg tarts here, but probably a bad idea to load up so early in the day.
Travel 25 mins to next location - parking + getting to the place about 5 mins
Stop 4: 11:30AM - 1PM - Belle’s Hot Chicken Fitzroy
- Dish: Belles Bucket with all the sides (though I would love to do 2 mac and cheese). Probably half Hot, and half Medium (or whatever the equivalent is called these days). This would be the big one for the day because it’s one of the most consistently deLISH chicken to have.
Travel 20 mins to next location - this will be drive through so dependent on how long it takes
Stop 5: 1:20PM - 1:40PM - KFC Ashburton
- Dish: Wicked Wings because they’re so bloody delicious. Probably a 10 pack but depends on how many people are there. To be eaten in the car on the way to the next place.
(Optional rest stop here for half an hour for digestion purposes)
Travel 20 mins to next location (incl. parking)
Stop 6: 2:30PM - 3:30PM - Gym Chicken
- Dish: 2pc with chips and drink - because it’ll be a good afternoon tea. Most likely would get the boneless fried chicken here, but it depends on preference!
Travel 30 mins to next location
Stop 7: 4PM - 4:45PM - Red Rooster in Box Hill South
- Dish: Hot Honey Fried Chicken - a smaller feed to have a bit of flavour and get that nice lil CRONCH; it’ll be a nice contrast to the korean fried chicken from the start of the day :D
Travel 10 mins to next location
Stop 8: 5PM - 5:20PM - Hot Star Fried Chicken in Box Hill
- Dish: No 1 Hot Star Fried Chicken - a bit of a big feed, but a pre-dinner snack. Plum salt recommended. It’ll be takeaway as we have to make our dinner reservation!
Travel 10 mins to next location
Stop 9: 5:30PM - 7:30PM - either Phoenix Soars in Jackson Court or Parent’s House
- Dish: Soy Sauce Chicken - this would either be purchased, or cooked by Dad because he makes the best damn Soy Sauce chicken I’ve had. Must have the spring onion / ginger accompaniments, and a bowl of rice to eat the chicken with.
END OF DAY
Any questions let me know. I know I still have a bunch of places I want to go, which include:
-
Bird in Brunswick
-
El Jannah in Preston
-
Leonard’s House of Love in South Yarra
So they might feature in future versions of this!

Banshees of Inisherin - charming, but a little confusing. It’s a story about the end of a friendship, but it’s got a lot more in terms of characters and themes than I thought. It was written by the guy who did In Bruges and Three Billboards outside of Ebbing Missouri - who I found it is also a playwright. Martin McDonagh’s characters are fantastically envisaged and the performances are absolutely wonderful - but it’s not always clear what is happening and / or why it is in a film form. Some gorgeous cinematography, some great black humour lines - definitely give it a try! It’s not for everyone but well worth a watch :)
-
MICF: Michael Hing - Long Live the Hing - not much time left for this show, but Michael Hing is in fine form and this show is one of his absolute best. I’ve been following him for a while now, and it’s fantastic to watch his growth and now his success in everything he’s doin’!

The psychological disconnect - a comment I found on reddit that helps to summarise what I have observed with ‘opting out’ of society:
The traditional expectation in American society is that if you put in a basic level of effort, you will be successful. You go to school, you study, you graduate, and you go to college. You don’t do drugs, you stay out of trouble. You start at an entry-level job. Financial success is supposed to follow. Not extreme success but a stable job that pays well, marriage kids owning a house, vacations.
Those things are supposed to follow Because you followed the rules.
When you follow all the rules and are not successful, it creates a psychological disconnect, and people react in different ways to that disconnect.

Phone Check - super fun idea, non-scalable but interesting. It’s a coat check, but it’s for your phone. What do you do when you don’t have one!

Sugar Pill Nation - I really want to make a placebo pill company. It seems like even if you tell people it’s a placebo, they still get the benefits?! There are still ethical considerations of course, but imagine if it worked??
