18 - Ideas

Trying something different this week - 18 weird, random ideas of things that I think could be built / written / explored - along the lines of this. Literally just me sitting in front of my computer trying to think up original new ideas and get the brain juices flowing.

  1. Books that you can read in your Google Glasses - maybe try to be the first to work out how to use speed-reading techniques in your Google Glass? Like this.

  2. An automatic wishlist functionality for libraries - track when the book comes back in! (without needing to reserve it...)

  3. Pre-commit to a year's worth of books, and get a choice from 3 random books each month that are like this.

  4. Create wine in perfect controlled conditions to mimic old wines. No idea if this could be done but 'Sour Grapes' the documentary probably implies that you can?

  5. Get a randomly chosen Facebook or Instagram picture (based on what you upload) printed and sent to you every month. Potentially mounted/framed? Sort of like Nanagram but automatically taken from your social feeds.

  6. A movie app that allows you to sign up to be reminded about when movies are coming out, potentially inviting you to premieres and giving you movie deals

  7. The 'Asian Mother' app - delivering you cut fruit every night to make sure you're healthy

  8. An art installation where, at the start of the day, a story is read out to one person. They then have to record themselves re-telling that story for the next person to hear, and then to re-tell themselves. What happens at the end of the day? What does the story become?

  9. A physical scroll wheel on the side of your phone that helps you scroll up and down. Useless but tactile?

  10. A VR simulation that simulates a near-death scenario. This could be done before you start uni - grow an appreciation of life when you're about to embark on the rest of your life? Might be too morbid at such a young age though...

  11. A physical mood tracker - something like Simone Giertz Everyday Calendar but for your mood every day. Could be a cool visualisation, and physical might be a cooler thing to make!

  12. Exoskeletons that train your movements for sport. So, helping to guide how you kick a ball, or swing a bat, so that it's optimal for your body / movement.

  13. Make the 'blind date with a book' concept, but with tv shows or movies. Bring a bit more serendipity into your life :D

  14. A brunch crawl - instead of a pub crawl

  15. Dinner party in a box - essentially giving you recipes / ingredients / menu / decorations...all of it together! It probably exists, but I'm too lazy to look it up right now...scraping the bottom of the barrel.

  16. A water bottle that automatically creates water from the atmosphere...somehow...

  17. Object Tetris: Point your phone at a bunch of items, and it shows you the optimal way to stack them (potentially can show it where you want to store it as well)

  18. Solar panels in the shape of leaves. (Idk it got hard thinking of the last one D:)

✔️ Real Life Recommendations

  1. Slay the Spire - a really fun game that I've recently bought on the Switch - it's a roguelike deckbuilder! I love the deckbuilder concept because I first experienced it through a boardgame. Thought it wouldn't work in a video game since I couldn't do the shuffling (LOL) but it's so good!! I'm really liking how it plays at the moment - it's so easy to pick up and put down because you make tactical decisions based on the card draw, and there's enough randomness in the enemies that it keeps it interesting.

  2. B Magazine - I found this series of magazines in Singapore; it's a breakdown of brands, but they also ventured into food! This was such a cool concept - the way the brand is built and the story is told is awesome. I found these again in Mag Nation on Elizabeth St - check it out!

🚌 Adventures on the Information Super-Highway

  1. China sets rules for young gamers - banning them from gaming after 10pm! Damn, being a totalitarian regime really gives you a lot of control over your population! It's like parents, but for the country. Which...I guess that's what the government is...?

  2. Palladium - the new precious metal - random articles like this about resources that are being used up quickly are always interesting, because it's so interesting to realize that even in a globalised society we're still dependent on resources from particular nations. It reminds me of the vanilla shortage that's occurring right now as well!

  3. Why books don't work - this was a fascinating long-read examining the difference of information formats to disseminate information, and why books aren't always the best way. Being an avid reader of books, it was an interesting read :D
