162 - Bed ποΈ
Hey there, !
We're talking beds.
Now, if you're in Australia, you're typically going to know about the classics:
-
Single (92 x 188 cm)
-
King Single (107 x 203 cm)
-
Double (138 x 188 cm)
-
Queen (153 x 203 cm)
-
King (183 x 203 cm)
Easy, breezy, beautiful.
But then, in a recent conversation as I was trying to work out what bed to buy for my new place, I was alerted to a few others:
-
Super King (204 x 204 cm)
-
California King (183 x 212 cm)
Now if you consider a normal 3m x 3m bedroom, that Super King is already a whopper of a bed. You have like... a metre clearance between the bed and the walls - and while that sounds relatively sane in terms of space, you ain't seen nothing yet.
Enter:
-
Emperor (200 x 200 cm) - (UK size)
-
Texas King (203 x 249 cm)
-
Wyoming King (213 x 213 cm)
-
Caesar (245 x 200 cm) - (UK size)
-
Alberta King (244 x 244 cm)
-
Alaskan King (274 x 274 cm)!
That's less than 30cm between your bed and a typical bedroom's walls! IMAGINE HOW GODDAMN BIG THAT IS. You literally have school ruler's amount of space between you and the wall. You can't open a closet. You pretty much have a WHOLE ROOM as your bed. (Obviously, you'd probably have to have bigger than a 3x3 room to put the bed in...)
Still, that's insane! Who needs that much space on their bed?! You could have like 4 adult people sleep comfortably on it with a lot of space to spare, but why would you want to?!!
And then I found:
-
The Ace Family Bed (365 x 200 cm) - a monstrously large bed designed for families to co-sleep in.
-
Extreme Ultra King - (365 x 305 cm) - a luxury LA brand that specialises in oversized mattresses.
It's just too much. TOO MUCH!
Other trivia:
-
Europe has a number of standard bed sizes, sitting at very nice metric numbers (90/100/120 cm widths for single beds, and 160/180/200 cm widths for double beds) - the lengths also standard at 200/210/220 depending on your height
-
In Italy, the names of the beds are:
-
Una piazza - 'one place'
-
Una piazza e mezza - 'one' and a half places' or Letto da prete 'priest's bed' O_O
-
Piazza e mezza francese - 'French one and a half places' ??
-
Due piazze - 'two places' or Letto matrimoniale - 'matrimonial bed'
-
-
The largest bed in the world measured 26.5m x 16.44m, built by Commissie Zomerfeesten St Gregorius Hertme (Netherlands) on 28 May 2011 - I assume it was built for charity, 'cos who's going to sleep on that ridiculousness???
Hope you enjoyed bed trivia.
Sleep well :)

Amsterdam - a period comedy thriller film directed by David O. Russell (who also did Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle) with an absolutely STACKED cast (Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Rami Malek, Anya Taylor-Joy, Taylor Swift, Robert de Niro, Mike Myers, Zoe Saldana, Michael Shannon, Chris Rock). So much star power, a fantastic production, great performances from the cast, and super cool costumes, let down entirely by the writing and editing. The plot is slightly incoherent, the editing was weird (sometimes cutting into the same shot for the scene?), the scenes were weirdly paced, and some of the voiceovers were too obviously ADR'd after the filming, taking me out of the film. It was not a bad watch, but it definitely dragged. A recommendation nonetheless to see some extremely good Christian Bale acting :D

Breakfast with Seneca - a bit self-help-y, but a simple and well-written guide to the writings of Seneca, a philosopher of Ancient Greece who has the most complete version of Stoicism that we can analyse today. I vibed a lot with his teachings about friendship, death and wasting time - there's a lot to learn from philosophy for an overthinker like myself. Highly recommended if you want something thought-provoking and meditative to read.

How I proposed with a boardgame - GOALS. Imagine proposing with an entire BOARDGAME that you created and built from scratch? I especially love the use of AI art as part of the box design to make sure it's unique :D

Mythbusters helped a wrongly convicted man prove his innocence - a lovely story about them trying to light gasoline on fire with a cigarette / match, and failing spectacularly. This dude was wrongly convicted and use the Mythbusters episode as evidence - the experiments were then corroborated by the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and they weren't able to do it either across 2000 experiments! Fantastic article.

Why half a million people watch me study on Tiktok - just for the companionship, I guess? New ways to interact with social media always have me interested.
