134 - Wordle Clones β¬β¬π¨π©π©
Hey there, !
A few updates up front:
-
I’ve done some more writing again on As I Am - read it here - the story of the Three Thirsty Monks and how translation is affected by context.
-
I’ve got COVID! Long time listener, first time caller - please send fun things my way to do during isolation :) Though this next piece is going to help…
Thought I might just do a roundup of all the Wordle clones I’ve been recommending (but also ones I’ve just heard about and played by myself as well). I considered a tier list but I might just go through a list because all of these scratch different itches, and have different difficulties which may suit different people. Hopefully you’ll find something new here that you like!
-
Wordle - the original, the best. Guess a 5 letter word in 6 guesses - simple, fun, easy. I have a 100+ streak now (!) - very proud, but also very scary when you get to a 6/6 guess.
-
Nerdle - a math version of Wordle, where you have to guess a mathematical equation in 6 guesses. Like ‘123+456=579’ - you have to work that out! It’s a pretty fun version, but it fell off for me - I do enough math at work.
-
Quordle - Wordle x 4, in 9 guesses - your one guess gets worked out for all 4 games at the same time. This is a challenging version of Wordle if you’re looking for something that’s still a word game, but ?I found it lacked the simplicity of Wordle so it didn’t stay too long.
-
Worldle - I found this one on Twitter - guess the country from a silhoutte of its shape. It was a bit janky, but usuable, and I felt like I had organically found something COOL. The interface isn’t super great though, and I was introduced to…
-
Globle - which has one of the better interfaces of this whole list - it’s finding the country, and being rated based on distance, but it uses a globe that gets coloured in as you get closer and closer. Really like this one!
-
Heardle - the audio version of Wordle - every wrong guess you get to listen to a bit more of the song. This one is really fun!! Especially if you can get it in one from the first chord that gets played :D
-
Semantle - the hardest clone I’ve seen - it gives you clues on how close you are in meaning to the secret word. It’s so hard. Like the first time I played I got up to 360 guesses before I found the word. On the other hand, being able to find it quickly feels SO GOOD.
-
Framed - the movie version that shows you increasingly obvious hints about what movie it is. I like this one because it’s a bit more curated; obviously by a fan of movies and it shows obscure stills first, until it gets to the easy ones later on. I enjoy this one a lot mainly because I like movies!
-
Chessle - guess the chess opening - both the black and white pieces. This one’s niche, yes, but a very fun and easy way to learn openings. Recommended if you kinda like chess!
-
Absurdle - the adversarial version of Wordle - it’ll try and give you the least amount of information possible based on your guess, and change the secret word if it needs to. Just imagine that someone is trying to hide the word from you while still giving you valid clues - that’s what it’s trying to do :D
-
Any Wordle-clone that is themed (StarWarsdle, Taylordle, Lewdle etc.) - I don’t really care for these ones because it’s just Wordle, except limited in specific words you can put down - so the search space is less interesting.

-
MICF - one of my favourite times of the year - it’s the Comedy Festival! Go and find someone new, someone random, someone popular to spend a night on - the laughs are always worth it :)
-
Speakeasy - Ronny Chieng’s new comedy special which is just as awesome as always #supportasiancreators. I rate it - it’s a good time, and has a lot of fun stories and observations. Wish he would be less obsessed with getting people to cancel him but what can you do :D

DALLΒ·E 2 - OpenAI has updated their AI system to make images and art from word descriptions. It’s crazily impressive - a fascinating use case I saw was alternative art being produced that had the same vibe of existing paintings (e.g. the Girl with the Pearl Earring).
-
Are you nice or kind? - a thought provoking piece about what it means to be nice (caring how someone is feeling) vs kind (solving the problem). I enjoyed this piece because the examples the author provides are very practical and relatable - do you just want to give soothing words of comfort and feel like you’ve done something? Or should you be solving a problem and moving on?

The rise of bassoonfluencers - one from the archives - the pandemic has made niche accounts blow up as people segment themselves out of mainstream culture - here’s one where people are watching you practice on TikTok and giving you feedback for your upcoming auditions!
