120 - A Break from another Weird Year π
Hey there, !
Phew! We all made it! Congrats! What a year it's been.
I'm tired, you're tired; let's keep this short and sweet before I go on break for a few weeks.
Work shuts down til the 10th of January so I have 2 or so weeks break? It'll be a sweet break, though I'm saving up some leave to go to Europe some time next year - new variant new me? An adventure, at least.
A few things I'm looking forward to:
-
I need to watch Hawkeye which I've been saving up for until I can binge watch it! On the other hand, I've been putting Seinfeld on in the background while I'm doing chores so maybe I'll get through that as well :D
-
I'm going to start packing up my room and things around the house in anticipation for when I move. I still have to get a builder and sort out things with the renovation but those things will come in time - part of the break will be sitting down to think through the build and what needs to happen!
-
Hoping to catch a few movies releasing (Matrix! The King's Man! French Dispatch!) over the break - though I'm not sure I'll do a Boxing Day movie day this year. I've already done a Love Actually-Die Hard back to back feature so tick for yearly ritual!
-
Seeing friends, family and getting into a few books will be very good as well - recharging the brain, the body and batteries for the year ahead
Hope you have a refreshing break (if you're having one) - let me know if you've got anything exciting on your end!

-
Spiderman: No Way Home - no spoilers. But I extremely recommend watching this - on any metric it has far exceeded expectations; second highest grossing domestic box office weekend in the USA, 94% Rotten Tomatoes, 9/10 IMDB, A+ CinemaScore. It's a beautiful movie and ending to the Spiderman trilogy, and is more of a 'payoff' movie than a 'setup' movie (e.g. the Eternals). Go watch it!

The Always Sunny podcast - long time readers of the newsletter know that this is my favourite 'sitcom' which is in its 15th season. The podcast has gone back to the start to do some rewatches, and it's fun to hear how the creators (Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day and Rob McElhenney) built this from the ground up, writing on yellow legal notepads and shooting on some handheld devices rather than anything sophisticated. It's really nice to have talent recognised and these guys have kept up the quality over YEARS. A recommend if you like the show :)

I blew $720 on 100 notebooks from Alibaba and started a Paper Website business | Tiny Projects - one of my favourite blogs I read - this guy who is literally side hustlin' all day erry day. This time around he built a blog website that essentially uses AI to predict OCR (recognising characters through a camera), which means you can 'write' out your post (literally) and then set it up online. Super cool breakdown!

There oughta be a WiFi Game Boy cartridge. - looks like we've got a theme going today! Another more tech-y breakdown of someone who tried to make a wifi-enabled GameBoy cartridge. At the moment it does very simple stuff (like accessing Wikipedia) but that's already magic to me!

How we built a truly Smart Office system based on Raspberry Pi - I have a few Raspberry Pi's sitting around the housee but I never really know what to do with them. Enter, this article! A smart office that has used RPi's in lights, tv's, card access, speakers, music - everything. I love these sots of things, mostly because they seem more organic than manufactured, and that's how you can breed fun times / ownership over your world.
