119 - The Sounds of Genres πΆπ
Hey there, !
My Spotify Wrapped this year is pretty wack.
Insights:
-
Didn't think that I would be hype and bold but I put it down to the copious amounts of Kanye and Lil Nas X I've been listening to this year. Putting things on repeat at work help focus me REALLY well.
-
114k minutes?! Actually insane - it's nearly 80 solid days of listening to music - really getting dat value from Spotify :D
-
It's interesting to see that my top artists don't align to my top genres - I put this down to my playlist hopping that I do for background music - often putting on background noise to my meetings, and work, and just daily life!
-
Emotions by Mariah Carey sitting up next to Kanye and Lil Nas X is very funny - it's a song I think I got into the groove for while working out because the song itself makes me so happy!
-
I've seen other people's Wrapped have podcasts, but I use a separate app for podcasts so it doesn't come up. We'll see what happens if I do switch over...
The other thing I've found from Spotify is Blend which helps you build a playlist with other people and see how compatible your music taste is. You can do this through the app - search for Blend and it should come up.
From this and another person's Wrapped, I was introduced a genre of music called Vapor Twitch and was like 'wtf is that'.
In searching for the genre, I found The Sounds of Spotify which is some sort of conglomerate user that makes comprehensive playlists for EVERY SINGLE GENRE of music you can think of. Have you heard of Amharic Pop? Or Bedroom Soul? Or 8D? It's crazy the amount of genres, and they're all annotated here if you're interested in looking them up!
I've stumbled on to:
-
The Sound of Vapor Twitch
-
The Sound of Vapor Soul
-
The Sound of Bedroom Soul
-
The Sound of Bedoom Pop
-
The Sound of Japanese Bedroom Soul
-
The Sound of Kyushu Indie
-
The Sound of Lo-Fi Rap
And the playlists are pretty incredible. They're very detailed - pretty much 4-8 hours deepdive into every genre of music.
Anyway, let me know your Spotify Wrapped insights!

The Beatles: Get Back - directed and produced by Peter Jackson, using remastering techniques for film and audio he did for previous movies, showing the development of the Beatles last album Let it Be. It's an extremely long feature documentary (3 episodes ranging between 2 - 3 hours each) but it's super fun to watch if you're a Beatles fan. Seeing the boys being...humans (?) I guess is very different and new. It humanizes them somewhat, and it was interesting to see their creative process, how Paul was a lot more controlling than I thought, how they all worked together and made decisions, bickered, joked, lived - it's an incredible piece of media that was great to watch through. Wonderful to see their final public rooftop performance, the people on the street giving their feedback, and even the police who came to the roof to try shut it all down! Recommend watching this in the background while you do other stuff though - it's far too long otherwise!
-
Dancing Flame Charcoal Grill - KBBQ is pretty hard to book at this time of the year, but I was able to find one on a friend's recommendation; it's a Chinese/Korean place that has some nice meats, and well priced food. It's not top of the pack by any means, but it's good value for what it is. Recommended if you're looking for something like this in the city!

Scale of the Universe 2 - an interesting little website that replicates that famous 'Scale of the Universe' flash thing from a long time ago. Scroll up and down and see what's big and what's small!

Nearly 2/3 of Gen Z think they'll become crypto millionaires - you know what I think about crypto, but it's at least a bit nice that they're more optimistic about growing rich from a new wave of technology and experimentation. I feel like my generation are more...resigned to the fact that shit is hard and the system is against us. Gen Zs are the next wave.

This Colorado 'solar garden' is a farm under solar panels - always wonderful to hear about climate change innovation, especially those that are being embraced in old industries. It's wonderful to see the
