Coming Up: Tech-Care Session July 15, 6-8pm

Join us for a guided co-working session focused on passwords, password managers, and more!

Hi ,

Have you been dreaming about getting together with a group of people on a hot summer night to secure your passwords and chat about password managers?

... Ok let me try again.

In news presenter voice: "It seems like every day there's news of another cybersecurity leak..."

This latest one inspired some panic - researchers found datasets of 16 billion exposed credentials on the dark web. These likely include duplicates and there's some debate as to whether these are repackaged credentials from old breaches or more recent, but either way, it's quite likely that our beloved well-worn passwords and our accounts have been exposed at some point.

(You can check out haveibeenpwned.com to take a look if your email address has been exposed in any data breaches, and scatteredsecrets.com will actually tell you what those passwords were.)

Don't worry if that all sounds like a lot, we'll chat about all this and more IRL in the upcoming Tech-Care session, which is the real reason I'm in your inbox.

Tech-Care Session:

Tuesday, July 15, 6-8pm

@ Creed's Coffee Bar (450 Dupont St, Toronto, ON, M5R 3P3)

Topic: Strong passwords and password managers (Change weak and compromised passwords, set up password managers)

Come have some tea, some laughs, bring your devices and password/passcode/passkey/passWhat? related questions. No password-shaming allowed. (It's a flawed system.)

Are you on top of your password game? Cool! Maybe you have some tips to share, or you want to come do some other boring digital hygiene tasks in a supportive co-working environment.

If cost is a barrier, please get in touch. :)

See you offline,

Tech-Care Sessions are guided co-working sessions to boost our digital security, privacy, and autonomy practices. Instructions and guides will be provided and your host will be on-hand for support. This time can also be used for other digital hygiene tasks of your choice, in a supportive co-working environment. All experience levels are welcome. Bring your devices!

Accessibility: Masks are encouraged. Please refrain from wearing chemical fragrances. Please stay home if you're experiencing upper respiratory symptoms. There is one step to enter Creed's Coffee bar. There is a washroom on the same level.

P.S. I'm switching to a newsletter format in a bid to rely less on Instagram and to organize my various notes and lists in one place. After some extensive research, I chose ButtonDown because it is one of the rare mailing list services out there that allows you to opt-out of subscriber tracking. Wild, huh. More on data and tracking in next month's Tech-Care session. If you believe you were added to this list in error, of course feel free to unsubscribe. If you'd like to send this email along to others, please do!

P.P.S. We've got some more events coming up this summer. Put them in your calendar!
