The Productivity Trap: Why Doing More Faster Isn't Leadership
Let me tell you about the most dangerous narrative in AI adoption right now.
"AI makes you more productive."
It's on every vendor slide deck. Every ROI calculation. Every executive summary. More output. Less time. Bigger margins.
And it's a trap.
The Trap
Here's what actually happens when leaders chase productivity as the primary AI metric:
Your team starts using AI to generate more reports, more analyses, more proposals, more content, more of everything. The output volume goes up. Everyone feels busy. Dashboards turn green.
But nobody asks: is any of this additional output actually moving the business forward?
Producing ten mediocre analyses is not better than producing two exceptional ones. Generating twenty proposals is not better than crafting three that actually win. Writing fifty pages of content is not better than writing five pages that change how your customers think.
Productivity without purpose is just organized waste at a higher velocity.
What AI Should Actually Enable
AI shouldn't make you do more. It should make you do BETTER.
The real value of AI for leaders isn't volume — it's quality of attention. When AI handles the repetitive, mechanical, and time-consuming work, what should you do with the time you get back?
Not more work. Better work.
- Deeper conversations with your team
- More thoughtful strategic decisions
- Time to think — actually think — about where your organization needs to go
- Relationship-building that creates lasting competitive advantage
- The creative, ambiguous, human work that no AI can do
The Leadership Equation
Here's how I think about it:
Old equation: Leadership value = hours worked x output per hour
New equation: Leadership value = quality of decisions x quality of relationships x speed of adaptation
AI changes the equation entirely. It makes hours and output less important. It makes judgment, relationships, and adaptability MORE important.
The leaders who use AI to free up time for deep human work will outperform the leaders who use AI to produce more stuff. Every time.
Try This Monday
Look at your to-do list. Mark every item that AI could do. Now — instead of having AI do those items so you can do MORE items — have AI do those items so you can spend that time on the ONE thing that requires your full human attention.
Use the time surplus for thinking, not producing.
I explored why human judgment and relationships are becoming the core of leadership value in The Irreplaceable Leader. Productivity isn't the goal. Impact is.
Do less. Better. That's the new leadership math.
