vaguesteph newsletter: spring feelings
"EEEEE"
hi! sorry! last week was a long week so now we are here, on monday, with a letter from me.
i would like to do more observational drawing but i am also working on too many projects at once and not even doing that in an effective way... mood: listening to the mountain goats.
last weekend, i was able to see ann oren's the world is ours (2017) and it was honestly not that impressive. i was disappointed because it seems like many fan created works explore miku hatsune's "man-made-ness" in more exiting ways... like, shots of the artist in cosplay on the subway in tokyo do nothing for me in terms of exploring miku and the relationship her fans have to her. those images mostly make me think the artist believes japan is weird. their attempt to embody such a many-faceted character is not successful at all.
as an example, i like the song electric angel as a fan-created exploration of miku's feelings. it's much more interesting what reveals itself when a producer and artist become complicit in creating this fantasy of the cute & loving & subservient programmed woman. i also can't believe how much these ideas have influenced my work until now! countless of my comics are about being a girlish figure behind the screen scared of someone closing the window! lol!
the disappearance of hatsune miku is also really good. i just found this video that seems to be from a life event, where the projection becomes "corrupted" in the end. in another translation i've seen the bit at the beginning translated as "the basis of my existence is unstable, the site where i return is already desolate"... WHAT A MOOD! these corny expressions made by (presumably) men of a girl's feelings about being created make me want to scream because i relate to them!!! no true self it's all just noise created by the discourse. that's poststructuralism baby!
please write to me if you can also relate to miku... ;-; and i hope you have a great week! <3
