vaguesteph newsletter: real fur scrunchie
"real fur scrunchie"
i'm working on a new longer comic, so i've been thinking a lot about the malleability of drawings of young beautiful women. the standardization in the way faces are drawn and then everyone has the same body type, just change hairstyle/ hair color/ skin color... what does it mean to create a queer aesthetic? i don't think applying the same principles of "illustrating what is commonly understood as beauty" or "polished comic art" to a more diverse cast is the answer. is a queer aesthetic a decision of content, or style? is it helpful to separate those in this context?
i realized, since this is coming directly to your inbox, it connects to the idea of comics-as-letters. that makes me happy... :_)
also, i found a pdf of the english translation of Hiroki Azuma's Otaku: Japan's Database Animals online... i won't link it but it's actually one of the first google results for me. that's where the quote in this comic is from! thinking about postmodernism, our world of images online and the concept of being "fake"... nothing new!!!
