vaguesteph newsletter: reading those texts
"visual pleasure and juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence"
i read laura mulvey's "visual pleasure and narrative cinema" recently- this is the text that the idea of the "male gaze" comes from, although by now the concept connected to those words has spread far and wide through tumblr and video essays and feminist critiques of pop culture or whatever. the text is good, but it's very 70s!
maybe i enjoy the concept of using psychoanalysis for theory, but i don't actually enjoy the results? i don't want to read about the phallus which is (always, essentially) identified with maleness etc. etc., though i like the concepts of "woman as symptom (of man)" or "woman as lack" because they're useful to me, personally... i guess i need to read some more and figure it out. :_)
i'm doing more research because i want to start working on my thesis soon, so prepare for more of "me-invested-in-the-idea-of-being smart". it's fine though, i think you knew this was part of the package when you signed up. ;-*
thanks for reading! see you soon!
