the screenshotted text in this is Are White Girls Capable of Making Art That’s Not About themselves?? from the white pube!! it is a great read if you are interested in a takedown of a certain kind of “feminist” artist. the piece linked in it, Closing the Loop, is even better. i wish i’d read it in 2016 when i was getting angry about the art practices described in it :_)
this obsession with “the self” or like, the obsession with their own specific struggles but staged as ~universal problems all women face~ some white (cis) feminists/ artists have… it’s good to see it described and called out because it is bad and i hate it!!
if i was invested in being smart at this hour i’d go on a little more about ~positionality~ or situated knowledges/ drag donna harraway into this but i feel like we all know about that. (sidenote: i miss tumblr in the early 2010s because even though i didn’t necessarily learn about that kind of stuff there, emotionally, it feels like i did.)
in some way this relates to the things andrea long chu wrote about in one of her essays: “[…] contemporary feminism is arguably defined by its refusal of woman as a political category […] In order to be for women, feminists must refrain from making any positive claims about women“
in other words (emojis): it’s all ⚫️ (hole/ lack/ refusal).
ok sorry for getting political but still being fragmentary like this. next week i will try to do a storyboard test for my longer comic, the first part of which will be about Battle Angel Alita! i can’t wait! i’m announcing it here so i go through with it!
sidenote 2: i’m interested in reading texts about the construction of gender as part of colonial frameworks. (as was previously mentioned i feel like hortense spiller’s mama’s baby, papa’s maybe “kind of” fits, but should i really be reading focault??? or who???) anyways if you have any texts related to this please let me know & send pdfs!!
