Hey outsiders,
There’s a new post on the blog and a plant profile to go with it. If you’re familiar with companion planting, you’ll like this one. If that term doesn’t mean anything to you, soon it will, in an unusual way.
Blog: Companion Planting With a Twist
Plants: Lacy Phacelia
And here's something I didn't expect to see on Saturday:
I was in the living room when this bee caught my attention. It seemed darker than a bumblebee and larger than most solitary bees, so I went outside to take a photo. Good thing because a minute later it landed on a serviceberry, cut a leaf, and flew off with it. A leafcutter! Its chomping was loud enough to hear, and it returned a few times for more leaves. It performed the routine in a rotating motion, biting while curling the leaf underneath its body, and then flying off before falling.
It was remarkable to see this in person. After delivering the leaf to its nest (out of sight), it came back to the native spirea flowers below the tree, fed for a minute, then got back to work. Proof that the yard is working hardly gets better than this.
Stay cool,
André
