Useful Yard

You heard—it was hot. The heatwave strained the yard but coincided with the first bloom of a young tree poppy. Being outside was overwhelming, but the plant lured me out throughout the days. Here is my reaction to those 100-degree moments…

Dried witch-hazell leaves.

With no rain in sight, there will be more to document about this stretch. So far the witch-hazel (above) has taken it the worst. New growth on established native plants is looking similar. I’m trying to water only small saplings, new seeds, and fruiting plants. But when even the crows show up with open mouths, waiting for the bird bath to be filled, it’s hard to put the hose down.
