Tonight on Uneasy Listening: Comfort and Catharsis
It’s been a tense year for everyone so as I mentioned last week, I’ll be playing songs that make me and my listeners feel better in some way! comfort, catharis, inspiration, whatever! Requests welcome! But you’d better hurry cause it starts 8pm eastern on WPRB!
I was really touched this week to see that WPRB made a facebook post this week about the possible identification a mysterious song recorded off the radio in the 80s, and then was immediately contacted by a listener who had been wondering about a song he heard, and could only vaguely describe, on WPRB back in 2000. Because WPRB is staffed by superhuman music freaks, our own Mike Lupica immediately identified the song, “Lotuspool” by NYC musician Dean Wilson aka Illyah Kurkyakin. The song was a bit of a WPRB hit at the time so Mike remembered it and was able to solve a 24 year mystery for a a listener!
That magical experience of hearing a song that is totally unknown to you and unfindable and eventually solving the mystery is less and less common these days with online playlists (nostra culpa on that one!), song identification apps and most importantly the homogenization of radio to the point where you’re just not going to hear something that your lil app won’t be able to ID, and barely anything that is unfamiliar to you, on most stations. But it can still happen on WPRB! And not only are we going to continue to create mysteries, our dedicated actual humans are so happy to try and solve them with you! That’s something you just don’t get from almost any other source of music. So this is a very long way to say, please support WPRB’s mystifying radio presence at pledge.wprb.com during our silent membership drive!
annnnd I did not get the show about walls and borders up on mixcloud yet but you can find it there when i do! Probably pretty soon! Maybe today!
