Hey there! This week, I've added 59 new interactions and 3 new apps. It includes China's fastest growing app that recently filed for an IPO in the US, an Apple Design Award winning coloring app, and an AR text effects app.
I've also included two old apps with some updates: an app that aims to redefine the browser experience on your phone, and YouTube's standalone gaming livestream app that they are shutting down soon.
Pinduoduo (拼多多): Social and group shopping
Lake Coloring: Relax and paint the stress away
Weird Type: AR words in space
Cake Browser: A browser just for your phone
YouTube Gaming: Watch gaming livestreams
As always, feel free to drop me a tweet on @abnux to share any feedback you might have. Have a great week ahead!
Pinduoduo is one of the fastest growing apps in China. It recently IPO'd in the US and is currently worth around $13.8B. They claim to have 343M active buyers, 60% of whom are from tier three cities in China. It is a social e-commerce app with a simple premise: Get a discounted price if you can get more people to buy the product. Very elaborate gamification, including a FarmVille style fruit garden that sends you actual fruit once your tree blossoms. Definitely worth checking out to see how they've built viral sharing into the app and how they leverage deep gamification.
Lake Coloring is an Apple Design Award Winner in 2017. This is what they said about it: "Lake’s simple and playful design is a delight and comes packed with creativity-enhancing tools, customized color palettes, and beautiful illustrations to help anyone create a masterpiece. It offers high quality curated illustrations from local and renowned artists that bring them together with their fans and ensures a rewarding and relaxing coloring book experience for all ages." Worth checking out for their intuitive onboarding and deightful interactions.
Weird Type is an AR app that lets you paint with text in space. You type a phrase, select a text effect and just tap the screen. You can also record effects and share straight to Instagram or anywhere else. Worth checking out for the AR effects and its potential as a creative design tool.
Cake Browser's pitch is that most mobile browsers are just stripped down versions of web browsers and have antiquated functionalities. Since the first time I documented it on UI Sources, Cake has optimized a lot of the core interactions and have a much better onboarding experience. Worth checking out for their use of an onboarding checklist that takes you through the main features one by one with animated and intuitive coach marks.
YouTube Gaming is their dedicated gaming livestreams app. The onboarding has a nice game aesthetic to it and gets you to follow games you play. However, they've announced that they will be shutting it down in March next year and bundling it's features into the main app. Check it out before it's off the App Store.
