Hey there! This week I've added 42 new interactions from 5 new apps. Thanks for the positive feedback from last week, I've received a lot of great suggestions on how I can keep improving the site.
Earlier last week, I posted a poll on Twitter asking if you'd like to see more Chinese apps on the website. It received an overwhelmingly positive response!
If you're curious what makes Chinese apps different, consider this: Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and most services the rest of the world uses are blocked in China. This has led to a very interesting homegrown ecosystem of apps designed specifically for the Chinese audience. To give you an example of what I'm talking about, check this out:
This is just one of the many unique design patterns I've found during my research. I have a feeling that a lot of Chinese patterns will make their way to western apps over the next few years. To properly document these, I'll probably be creating a new section on the site and creating videos with screen translations to explain the local context.
Let me know if this is something you'd be interested in, I'd love to hear from you! Hit reply or send me a message on Twitter.
New apps this week
Primer is an app by Google with bite sized courses on digital marketing and business. A lot of delightful microinteractions, custom illustrations and gamification to check out! I especially liked the card swipe interactions and the different ways it quizzes you to create an interactive experience.
MustApp helps you to track all movies and series that you've watched or want to watch. It notifies you about new premieres and episodes, recommends movies based on your taste and collects reviews from your friends. The app is designed beautifully in line with the latest iOS design guidelines and feels like a mobile first version of IMDB.
imwith Messenger (YC S17) might be the most playful messaging app I've ever come across. The onboarding guides you to make your own gallery of reaction GIFs that you can send to friends. You should definitely check out how they onboard users with a bot-like tutorial, get you to invite friends and to build your own selfie GIF gallery. The app feels like a fun game rather than just texting.
Foursquare is an app to find local restaurants and bars around you. They've been around since 2009 and have one of the best local data sets the world. You can find recommendations, write reviews and keep track of where you've been.
Trips by Lonely Planet is a simple and intuitive way to share your trips and travel experiences. You can import images, write text, add maps and more. If you're planning a vacation, check out experiences from other travellers here to get some ideas!
