Day 3: Ivy Allie’s Hourly Comics Day collections
I picked up this little set of self-published comics at SPX. (In fact, a lot of this month will be me finally reading everything I bought at SPX.) They are so fun! All three were drawn for Hourly Comics Day, an annual ritual in which cartoonists try to draw a new comic every hour of a single day. Each collection just chronicles the normal, everyday stuff of Ivy Allie’s life at the time: work; food; people watching; what she’s reading, watching and listening to; and a few meta-reflections on the process drawing of these comics every hour!
What I loved most about reading three separate years of these comics was seeing Ivy’s style evolve. Even in these quick, off-the-cuff comics you can see a distinct difference between 2021 and 2023 as her linework becomes bolder and more confident. At the same time, you can still clearly tell it’s the same hand at work on the page; the essence of her style remains, even as the individual drawings of herself shift and solidify.
