Review: Crash Landing
30 Comics in 30 Days - I’m reviewing a comic (almost) every day in November. But I missed yesterday. Whoops! There are no rules, I can do what I want.
Day 15 - Crash Landing. Story and art by Brandon Hayman. Colors by Rhea Hayman.
This was a quick, fun read by a Fort Worth cartoonist. (Support your local artists, you philistines!)
It’s a zany sci-fi romp featuring two aliens who visit Dallas to indulge in the local cuisine. (Specifically, corn dogs.) The banter between the aliens, which can be quite funny, is definitely what makes the comic work. Some of the jokes rely on a Strange Planet-esque humor, where the characters describe normal human things in terms that are slightly off-kilter. (One alien describes longhorn cattle as “big hairy creatures with long twisty teeth that grow out of the sides of their head.”)
What’s especially impressive is that Brandon drew the comic in a 12-hour marathon session. It’s short (only eight pages) and fast-paced but certainly doesn’t feel slapdash or shoddy!
