There's no place like home

Dorothy Knows What Time It Is

Happy Friday, all! Your Dames are finally home from their travels to Chicago - where we got to see each other in person and freak out with joy over the ALA Youth Media Awards, eeeee! - and you can look forward to a longer newsletter again next week.

The brevity of this week makes it even easier to highlight a reminder that we want YOU to make a Twitter date with us for our first-ever movie live-tweet, of the great and endlessly quotable Moonstruck. Please don't stand us up, lest we be forced to ask you to bring us the big knife.

Visual Crushes:

Maya Angelou shows us all how literary lounging is DONE.
  • Although winter has done its level best to destroy us in the last week, we will allow as how snowflakes are pretty amazing. FINE.

  • The dreamiest architectural watercolors make us want to book a ticket to Poland posthaste!

  • These mirrored cups + patterned saucers are mesmerizing.

  • The gorgeous, stylish women who defined Black Glamour long before Beyonce & Lupita make us feel very frumpy, indeed. (Hat tip to Kim Franceand her wonderful website GIRLS OF A CERTAIN AGE for this link!)

  • And finally, inevitably: the Magic Mike XXL trailer is a thing of female gaze-honoring beauty. Mmmf

Miscellany:

Dame Sophie is crazy about seltzer and positively guzzled this fascinating profile of NYC’s Last Seltzer Man.(Seriously, how large is their delivery radius? I will sign up now.)

Queen Elizabeth II has prudently decided that adopting any new, young corgiswould bring unneeded tripping hazards into her life, so she’s just going to stick with her older ones and not replace them when they pass onto their eternal canine reward. Solid life choices, Your Majesty. Thanks to reader Meaghan for the link! This picture, one of many featured in the story, is like 100% of our vision board (corgis! PRINT HAT! white gloves!), I'm pretty sure:

Related:Laika & Her Comradesmay be The Most Russian (read: melancholy & poetic, yet hyper-competitive) thing we’ve ever read:

Commenting on the death of Laika in Sputnik 2, one of the leading scientists, Oleg Gazenko stated that: “Working with animals is a source of suffering to all of us. We treat them like babies who cannot speak. The more time passes, the more I’m sorry about it. We shouldn’t have done it. We did not learn enough from the mission to justify the death of the dog.”

Oscar prep! Here’s where you can stream the films nominated in the Documentary category.

Sometimes, people are the actual, condescending worst, but we’re sharing Jolene Creighton’s Here’s What it’s Like for a Woman to Send a Job Rejection to a Manbecause we agree with her that it’s important and valuable for women to speak up & out when they’re treated this way. Late-breaking Friday favorites include 300+ manatees foiling the plans of humans at a Florida hot-spring with their languorous chillfest and Marvel's all-female Avengers team, A-Force, to be co-written by G. Willow Wilson and Marguerite K. Bennett. AND OF COURSE the triumphant reunion of Missy Elliott, Timbaland and Ginuwine. FLAIL!
