Special Bulletin: KATEGATE
A Royal Brouhaha Link Roundup
Hello, Dames Nationals!
If your last 48 hours have been anything like mine, you are dying to read:
2-3 really good, substantive articles about what exactly is going on with this whole Kate Middleton circus
An infinite number of joke tweets about same
For the former, let me recommend with all my heart the following pieces:
From Nieman Lab and Ellie Hall (formerly the chief Royals Reporter for BuzzFeed News, may it rest in peace), this piece is both a thorough explanation of how the royals’ press works and what’s so strange about how things with Kate have been handled, and a complete timeline of events up through March 11th. If you only read one piece about this situation (lol as if you could stop at one), this is the piece to read.
Our dear friend Kathryn VanArendonk is in Vulture, with a sensible, funny, and correct piece in the great tradition of Elizabeth I’s via media which puts forth: (1) something weird is going on with Catherine, Princess of Wales, (2) “the internet has entirely broken our collective ability to see perfectly plausible explanations as likely scenarios,” and (3) the Royals are so, SO bad at managing it, it’s truly wild to observe.
And, rounding out our serious takes, Charlie Warzel’s piece about how Catherine’s doctored Mother’s Day photo demonstrates that we are already in “choose-your-own-reality information dystopia” is definitely the best summation I’ve seen of the larger implications of this whole mess.
And for the CAVALCADE of funny tweets: for that, you’ll need to check out our Instagram—
In the meantime, happy sleuthing!
XOXO/Dame Margaret
