Drugstore Cowgirl: Summer Breezes
Sweat pooling, brain sweltering, and patience running thin? There's a scent for that.
Temps finally cracked the 80 degrees mark here in the northeast United States this week, which feels great but also means the sweatiness and the crankiness and lingering by the freezer case for a few luxurious moments of relief are right around the corner. Summer is the time for lighter, refreshing, cooling scents and I have some bargain suggestions for those who foresee a season of much needed, affordable pick-me-ups in their futures.
This is no longer a drugstore classic, but 4711 dates back to 1799, calls itself the original Eau de Cologne, was the scent of choice for Holly Golightly in the original Breakfast at Tiffany’s novella, and is still pretty inexpensive! I keep mine in the refrigerator and dab it on my pulse points and temples while leaning on the open door like some sort of fragile heiress pushed to the brink, the VERY brink, mind you of sanity. It’s very citrusy and green but not sharp--no Lemon Pledge vibes at all, just soothing yet bracing coolness.
For layering or just as a smell-similar option I like White Citrus from Bath & Body Works, an online exclusive. It’s not quite as herbal as 4711 but it’s still a lemony and lime-y, dehumidifying fav. As always, wait for a body care sale. It’s buy 3/get 3 free right now, which is not bad but there are even better deals to be had.
