What are Community Forums?
In 2024, The Turing Way team has started a series of calls called 'Community Forums'.
"I voted for Forum [...] because it conveys a stronger vibe of a place to highlight contributions from the many to share with each other." - Liz Stokes
Community Forums will bring together members of The Turing Way community - including people who have not yet contributed to the project! Modelled off a political town hall event, these online sessions are an opportunity to better understand activities across the project and how decisions are made. Our aim is to leverage the expertise across our community, and we explicitly invite you to review our processes and recommend improvements. We expect that the calls will be a mix of celebration, feedback, and opportunities to build connections with other organisations and initiatives around the world.

The Turing Way is now listed as a Digital Public Good!
We are so proud to announce that The Turing Way is now listed as a Digital Public Good (DPG) by DPG Alliance! 🎉🎉🎉
What are DPGs?
The United Nation's Secretary-General’s Roadmap for Digital Cooperation defines DPGs as open source solutions such as software, data and content that contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Turing Way is listed under 'content' type and for contributing to SDG Number 4: "Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning". Alongside other open source projects like OpenStreetMap and Ushahidi, we are delighted to join the DPGA registry: https://digitalpublicgoods.net/registry/.
Last year, The Turing Way was also included in Civic Technology Field Guide as a project that using technology for the common good.

We have opened the call for application to participate in the upcoming Book Dash taking place from 3 to 7 June 2024.

If you've been part of our community or have a passion for collaboration to improve data science practices or The Turing Way itself, now's your chance. Apply to work with us on your ideas or join us again as a contributor and/or mentor.

Need some help and collaboration on your Book Dash application?
Join us at our next Collaboration Cafes (3 and 17 April), where we'll be hosting an open Q&A about the Book Dash. Find the joining details on this shared note.

Join the Practitioners Hub as Experts in Residence or Advisors
The Turing Way Practitioners Hub is inviting Expressions of Interest (EoI) from organisations/small and midsize enterprises (SMEs) and industry experts engaged in data science and AI to work with us.
The deadline for registering your interest is 30 May 2024.

We are inviting SMEs and organisations to join our second cohort of Experts in Residence (EiR). With a focus on implementing best practices in data science and AI initiatives in their own organisations, practitioners from various sectors will engage in this cohort-based programme between September 2024 and February 2025.

We are also accepting interest from individuals to join our network of advisors who will engage with our project and cohort activities. Advisors will bring real-world expertise that can benefit small and medium enterprises interested in implementing best practices in data science and AI initiatives in their organisations.

Join us at Collaboration Workshop for 5 Year Anniversary Workshop and Celebrations!
We're really excited to share the Kirstie will be hosting a workshop celebrating 5 years with The Turing Way at Collaborations Workshop 2024 (CW24).

In line with CW24's theme, she will be facilitating a showcase and discussions on the topics relating code testing, environmental impact of digital research and inclusive events. Podcast on Building Data Science Teams
Emma Karoune, in collaboration with Malvika and Alexandra, is working on a Skills Policy Award-funded research project: Professionalising Data Science Roles.
Since March 2023, this project is being delivered as one of The Turing Way sub projects, drawing practices, sharing resources and collaborating with The Turing Way community in its efforts.
To make outcomes accessible in different formats, the project team has collaborated with Peter Schmidt, host of the Code for Thought podcast, to produce two episodes discussing different aspects of this work.
The first podcast featuring Emma, Aida Mehonic, Vicky Hellon, Luis Santos, Katriona Goldman, and Jonathan Yong from the Turing's Research Community Management, Research Application Management, Data Wrangling and Research Engineering Groups is out!

Alejandro Coca-Castro presented the talk "The Turing Way: Reproducible, Inclusive, Collaborative Data Science" at the Institute for Computing in Climate Science (ICCS)'s ReproHack on 12 March: Zenodo link.
Emma Karoune and Anne Lee Steele led a workshop for licensing and data management on 7 & 14 March for the Centres for Doctoral Training (CDT) students: Zenodo link.
Pen-Yuan Hsing gave a talk "The critical role of open source in open research" at Open Ireland Network on 20 March: Zenodo link.
Anne Lee Steele gave a presentation about The Turing Way for the Data-Centric Engineering meeting on 22 March: Zenodo link.
Malvika Sharan gave a keynote talk at the Women in Data Science Worldwide event at Edinburgh on 27 March: Zenodo link.
Workshops and Discussions
Alexandra Araujo Alvarez, Esther Plomp, Emma Karoune, Anne Lee Steele, Jennifer Ding, Jim Madge, Malvika Sharan and Kirstie Whitaker hosted an exhibition booth at AI-UK on 19-20 March, holding discussions on a range of topics with the conference attendees.
Valentin Denchev, Malvika Sharan, Amaya Gallagher-Syed and Adrian Weller co-organised Responsible AI workshop on 21 March at the Digital Environment Research Institute (DERI), Queen Mary University of London. Attended by nearly 80 people in a hybrid mode, the event hosted opening notes by Neil Chue Hong and David Leslie, and talks by 26 speakers under four tracks.
Arielle Bennett and Alexandra Araujo Alvarez facilitated a panel discussion on "Aligning Professional Roles and Incentives with Open, Reproducible, and Ethical Research" at the Year of Open Science culmination conference on 22 March. Coordinated by Malvika Sharan, this panel featured the speakers Neil Chue Hong (SSI), Sandra Gesing (US-RSI), Esther Plomp (TU Delft) and Joseph Muliaro Wafula (African open science platform).
