After a quieter month for The Turing Way, we are back to our regularly scheduled events with some exciting times ahead for the community:
- 📚💨 Apply to join our next Book Dash, 4–8 November 2024 – Applications for participants are due by 27 September.
- 🔥 Join our next Fireside Chat on mental health in data science on 12 September at 15:00 UK time (UTC+1).
- 📣 Join our next Community Forum on 3 October and onboarding call on 30 October – save the dates and sign up to join!
We are resuming Collaboration Cafes as usual on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 15:00 to 17:00 UK time (UTC+1).

Join our upcoming September Fireside Chat
On 12 September at 15:00-16:30 UK time (see in your time zone), we're hosting a Fireside Chat on Addressing mental health in academia – building a collaborative ecosystem to effect sustainable culture change".
Chaired by Wendy Ingram and Alden Conner, this panel will feature insights from Gabor Kismihok, Kerrie Wilkins and Jennifer Bekki.
The first hour will be composed of a facilitated discussion, with the final 30 minutes reserved for unrecorded open discussion with all attendees.

We have opened the call for applications to participate in the upcoming Book Dash taking place from 4 to 8 November 2024.

If you've been part of our community and share our passion for collaboration to promote data science best practices or want to improve The Turing Way, this is your chance.
Apply to work with us on your ideas or join us as a contributor and/or mentor.
The application deadline is 27 September.

Need some help and collaboration on your Book Dash application?
- Join us at our next Collaboration Cafes (18 September), where we'll be hosting an open Q&A about the Book Dash. Find the joining details on this shared note.

Join our next Community Forum on 3 October
On 3 October at 15:00 UK time (in your time zone), we are hosting our next Community Forum.
This is part of a series of community calls that bring together members of The Turing Way community - including people who have not yet contributed to the project!
Modelled off a political town hall event, this online session is an opportunity to better understand activities across the project, our governance process and how decisions are made. Our aim is to leverage the expertise across our community, and we explicitly invite you to review our processes and recommend improvements.
We expect that the calls will be a mix of celebration, feedback, and opportunities to build connections with other organisations and initiatives around the world.

Recurring Community Events and Calls ☕
Hosted all throughout the month, our recurring community calls are important and engaging spaces where you can learn more about The Turing Way!

Previous Talks and Workshops
- This month, the Turing's Research Community Management team delivered multiple workshops on GitHub for the high school students as part of the Turing's Summer Experience programme: Zenodo.
- Malvika gave an opening talk on 15 August at the Open Science workshop hosted by Bioinformatics Outreach Kenya on the topic 'Open Science Fundamentals for Bioinformatics': Zenodo.

Submit to the Hidden REF Competition 2024
Submissions close soon for the Hidden REF Competition 2024!
The Hidden REF was launched to raise awareness of the research outputs and roles that are vital to research but overlooked by traditional research evaluation. In the 2021 competition, The Turing Way was highly commended in the Practices Panel.
The deadline is 13th September 2024. We strongly encourage you to take part in the competition if you work in research and want to raise awareness of your own work or the work of others.

Apply for the Software Sustainability Institute Fellowship
Applications for the Software Sustainability Institute (SSI) Fellowship Programme 2025 are now open.
SSI Fellows serve as ambassadors and advocates for good practices in research software and data science. They receive a financial support package, networking opportunities, and professional guidance throughout the fellowship.
The deadline for applications is 7 October 2024.
A launch webinar was hosted to discuss various aspects of the fellowship application process, and a recording is available online. For more information, visit the SSI website.
Several members of The Turing Way are part of the fellowship network and can answer questions about the application process.

Attend the AI Insight Chat Series
On 24 September 2024, from 12:00 to 13:30 UK time, the first session in the AI Insight Chat Series will take place online.
Building on The Turing Way's Fireside Chat format, our colleague Alexandra Araujo Alvarez, the Turing's Senior Research Community Manager for BridgeAI is working with different teams is designing this series.
This session will feature an expert panel sharing perspectives from various sectors on the topic "Building an Effective AI Team."
The discussion will explore the challenges and opportunities in developing AI teams that can deliver on an organization’s strategic goals, as well as the skills required to confidently address current and future AI challenges.
