The badly named Season 2

Dear reader,

I’ve been thinking about how to phrase this in an urbane or witty way but the truth is that I haven’t written a newsletter in so long and I just needed a way to start, and here it is. Sometimes you just need to start.

Since I last wrote, some things have happened. The world shut down. My personal world shut down, my beloved got sick, and then somehow, in the grace of God, she got better (we’re all okay now). Somewhere there, I started writing fiction and kept on going.

If you’re not sure who I am, or what I’m doing in your mailbox - I’m Guan Un, a writer based in Sydney. This started as ‘Topic Sentence’ - a newsletter about sentences. You might know me in person (sorry), or by association through the magical Sarah Avenir (hi), or have come across my fiction (thank you!).

And yes, I started writing fiction. Speculative fiction, for the most part - I’ve published seventeen stories in the last three years. I was nominated for an award, had a story read by LeVar Burton, and uh, got mentioned in People magazine? No, I don’t know either.

If you don’t want me in your inbox anymore, I totally understand: I’m a big advocate of people unsubscribing to my newsletter. I don’t want to contribute to some collective scarcity mindset because of a newsletter: life is too short to spend time on email you won’t read.

If you want to stick around, I will be talking about sentences still, because I’m me. But probably also about crafting fiction and ways of seeing the world, which are approximately the same thing.

If you want to tell me how you’re doing, I would love that! Otherwise, season 2 (of this newsletter) begins now: sometimes you just need to start.

Shaking off the cobwebs,

Guan
