šŸ‘‹šŸ½ Tommy George’s Email Experiment: The one without scary tech news. This one has videos!

An Email Experiment

Heelllloooooo friend!

It’s February! And by the time you’re reading this, ā€œthe big gameā€ has already happened! I hope your favorite team won. ;)

Speaking of sports, my friend Rod came over recently and helped me do a sort of ā€œtechnical rehearsalā€ for a podcast I plan to start. More on that soon…?!

This email doesn’t contain any tech news, necessarily. But it does have multiple video links!

A month later

I can say this now: I was fasting in January. But not food. Nope, nope. More sacrificial, interrupting, and habit changing for me: Twitter.

I opened the app once on February 1st to check for DM’s and @ā€˜s. I haven’t opened it since.

Reflecting, I realize there are a few very valuable relationships and info that aren’t available elsewhere. So I’ll definitely pick it back up. But I’ll be doing some pruning, for sure.

I’m pretty cynical about folks who ā€œtake breaksā€ from social media and presumably just dive back into the same thing. I’d rather find the appropriate, sustainable form of usage.

Is that even possible? I dunno. What do you think? I hope so, and for now I’m going to keep recommending folks strive for ā€œsunstainableā€.

More education, less tinfoil hat

I’m still on a quest to responsibly educate folks about our digital world. But I’m trying to work on my delivery. I’m sure there’s got to be a sweet spot. But certain facts make it hard to ā€œease the blowā€ for some stories. If you have recommendations for an article, video, etc, that explained the urgency of a hard problem, without casting unnecessary fear or sensationalism, I’d love to hear about it!

Enough with the questions, show me some links

  • šŸ„‹ I liked this 13 minute video of John Mulaney on Steven Colbert. Talking about anxiety, handling life more like a kid does, and ā€œdealing with the karate classes of lifeā€.
  • šŸ”I’ll probably bring this channel up a lot, but you have GOT to watch some of The Lock Picking Lawyer. Seriously! Need a chill 3-minute video that has nothing to do with your life? You’ll love these!
  • šŸ”„(No link, just a hot-take) There’s a Vine app ā€œrebootā€ called Byte, and apparently people were surprised to see it has ads…?
  • šŸš€ Actual astronauts, in actual space, reading books to children. — What else should I even say?

What’d you like in January?

I’ve got a huge pile of tech news, more scary stories of real-modern-life, and maybe some other deep thoughts coming.

But what about you? What’d you laugh, cry, read, watch, learn, or listen to in January? Anything you want me to share with the group?

A Recent Verse

Somehow, I didn’t recall this really interesting detail from the story of Joseph:

ā€œOf course, they didn’t know that Joseph understood them, for he had been speaking to them through an interpreter.ā€ — Genesis‬ ‭42:23‬ ‭NLT‬‬
