👋🏽 Episode 9: Tommy George's email experiment -- the newest one ever!
Howdy, friend!
How is it March 15th already? This feels like the fastest year yet. 🐎
Elizabeth is 5 months old! When showing pictures to folks, I can only scroll back a week or so before I start saying "she hardly looks like this anymore!". She's still not crazy about tummy-time, but definitely prefers to (try to) sit up.
I think she figured out raspberries yesterday. That's the sound I woke up to today. 😆 So. Fun.
Pandemics
Because some folks have asked, and because it simply can't be avoided: I'm going to mention Covid-19. If you have questions, or are wondering what the Right Thing To Do is, please stick to official, reputable sources. Nationally, and globally, these pages are extremely helpful:
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official Covid-19 page.
- The World Health Organization Covid-19 FAQ, which answers a lot of common questions.
Otherwise, here in the USA, check your local county outlets for information. E.g., where I live that's Tarrant and Denton County. They each have dedicated Twitter accounts, and official websites, where they've been great about posting official updates.
You can usually find those pretty easily by searching for your county, e.g., "denton county", on Twitter, Google, etc.
Random internet entertainment 🎉
Note: For the Twitter threads, Twitter changed their design and you may have to actually click "show this thread" once you open the link. Boooo.
- A twitter thread (not mine) of "binge-worthy" YouTube channels. I recognize several of them, but there's a bunch I've not watched.
- A twitter thread (also not mine) of "very round animals". You probably need this in your life. 😆
- Sunday Cool Tees video of "Christian Cussing" -- Some of these are actually pretty funny!
I opened twitter again 🐵 🙈
I opened twitter for the 3rd (maybe 4th) time this year a couple days ago, to look at the aforementioned county twitter accounts. I stuck around a bit for some of the "fun" and peer-based news. It's probably obvious, because suddenly there's a bunch of twitter links in this email! I'm still trying to mostly stay out of it lately, but it's definitely how I'm most connected to some of my industry folks.
In my opinion, Twitter can be a dangerous source of news. But it can sometimes be a helpful pointer toward other sources, depending on your level maturity, self-control, and ability to filter sensationalism and "noise".
🤷🏽♂️ Not sure why I wanted to write that out. Maybe more on that later. Thoughts?
Remote work 💻 👷🏽♂️
I've been working remotely full-time since 2011. If you want to talk about working from home, etc., feel free to send me your thoughts or questions!
If you're recently trying to work from home more and finding yourself extra distracted, it's probably not just you.
Louie Mantia recently said:
"It's not just just because you're new at working from home. A lot of it is because of the circumstances."
This is very true. Lots of my remote peers have also been struggling a bit.
Hang in there, and ask questions!
I'm hoping to blog some soon about remote work, and also about the crazy number of different work environments I've had before this. 🤞🏽 Meanwhile, send questions or thoughts if you have them.
Your words in these emails?
Speaking of sending your thoughts or questions: I will absolutely use some of this space to do Q&A, or even publish your responses or replies, if you are so inclined!
If I've ever sent a link to something, and you found something even better or more interesting, share it! Had a strong reaction? Let's hear it!
Lawn stuff 🌳
(It's controversial to some folks, but we want a nice lawn in the yard for enjoying with our feet, and having kids play. With that out of the way...)
It's spring! I was super excited to get started on some DIY lawn stuff, but we're having about 10 straight days of rain here, and so there's not much I can do.
There's a huge "infestation" of Dallisgrass in my backyard. 🙄 I wasn't able to get the right pre-emergent down early enough, because of schedules and weather. We'll see what I can get by hand, and as-selectively-as-possible, once the weather dries up.
If you're in North Texas and doing any DIY lawn stuff, you're probably already familiar with The Lawn Care Nut on YouTube, right?
There is no "Junior" Holy Spirit
A couple weeks ago I volunteered at two youth camps, one specifically for Junior Highers (7th and 8th grade, here).
Out of about ~330 students at the Junior High event, 217 said they heard God speak, and 202 (re-)committed their lives to Jesus, some for the first time.
I loooooove doing student ministry camps! I got to know a lot of our students a little better and, despite how student ministry might change a bit over the next few months, I'm very excited to see them in the future and have lots of fun over the summer.
Land the plane
So this one was all over the place! 😬 ~900 words of stream-of-consciousness. (More like "stream of consiousmess? 🥁 Hashtag dad jokes).
Elizabeth's been napping, and it's almost time for her to eat!
See you soon!
PS: There was no Episode #08. ;)
