Week 20: So long

Tian Tian Farm Newsletter - October 17, 2024

Logistics
This will be the final share of the regular season. Next week we will deliver make-up boxes to those who’ve arranged with us to receive one. We’ll deliver them to your regular pick-up spot and you will receive an email when your box is ready to pick up.
This Week’s Share:
Shallot
Honey nut squash (see note below)
Red onions
Yu choy
Komatsuna
Stir fry mix
Head lettuce
Golden beets
Regarding your honey nut squash: This is perhaps our favorite winter squash. A mini, extra-sweet butternut. Your squash is not ripe yet. We recommend storing it in a warmish place until it reaches this color. Some of you will be receiving a few extra small squash. We believe those squash could be roasted whole and eaten, skin and all.
And on your beets. We planted a late crop of golden beets for your boxes, but they did not bulk up as much as we would’ve liked. So consider them baby beets. They should roast or steam or boil much quicker than normal. The greens are also edible. They are similar to Swiss chard.
Thank you
As we close down the farm for the season, and as I reflect on the end of my short farming career, I am overcome with gratitude for our CSA members. The ways you changed our lives are innumerable.
You allowed us to purchase a hoop house to grow tomatoes and a van to deliver orders. You connect us to a community, which we so long for as we work in a (quite literally) solitary field. You write compliments and feedback. You receive, cook, and eat the veggies of our labor, affording Tian Tian Farm a purpose.
We couldn’t have done this without you.
Eternally grateful,
Steven
