This week, Steven’s sister was visiting, so we made a bigger deal of meals than usual and went all out on hot pot. In addition to some thinly sliced Stella Maris pork, Aeggy’s eggs, and grocery-store vermicelli, we grabbed leftovers from the day’s harvest. We even scrounged up a few volunteer chrysanthemum greens (coming soon to a farmstand near you!). Steven peeled the leathery skin off several stalks of celtuce and chopped the crisp inner flesh into thick matchsticks, and washed and quartered Hakurei turnips. I rinsed the celtuce leaves and sliced the komatsuna into 3-inch sections, while Steven’s sister mixed chopped garlic, shacha sauce, and sesame paste for dipping sauce.
We sat around the bubbling pot, alternately testing the turnips for tenderness and dropping in the celtuce and komatsuna leaves for 30 seconds, then fishing them out. The leaves were limp and drenched with broth, their ribs delightfully crunchy. It turns out that with hot pot, you can eat *a lot* of vegetables without even realizing it.
Thanks for supporting our farm,
Elizabeth
