CSA Week 16: What is a weed?

Farm Share Newsletter - September 24, 2023

Housekeeping
Wow! I'm thrilled by how many of you have RSVP'd for our farm event next week. More details in a separate email (to those who have RSVP'd) to come.
If you're coming to our event, and you typically receive boxes on Sundays, then your box will be at the farm.
For this week — I made a mistake packing this week, and I believe some of you (Vashon and West Seattle) will be missing gai lan in your box. I'll reach out to you individually to make sure a bunch of gai lan gets to you.
Finally, due to another writing deadline (both of us work as journalists, and as the weather gets colder, our work picks up), we'll have a very minimalist newsletter this week.
This Week's Share:

“What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Although the vast majority of our CSA crops were planned. We've put a few unintentional veggies in your boxes (read: volunteer kale). We have not given you any "weeds." Today, that changes. One of our most persistent weeds is purslane, which grows tentacly and carpets many of our beds. Thankfully, it's also totally edible and nutritious and delicious! Some ideas for purslane here.
Our shiso is beginning to bud. Thankfully, again, shiso buds + salt and time = a great garnish! Instructions here.
Apologies for the brevity.
'Til next week,
Steven
