A carpet of kale
Hello!
The farmstand is currently stocked with:
Komatsuna (lots and lots of it!)
Gailan (not as much, but we'll try to keep the small amounts coming)
Stir-fry mix
Salad mix
Thai basil
By Sunday (7/9) at noon, we'll also have:
Baby kale (limited edition!)
Snap peas
A few weeks ago, in an area of our field that last year was home to kale, we noticed a fuzz of brassica cotyledons emerging among our just-seeded beets and newly transplanted lettuces. I made a mental note to weed there, so that the vegetables we had deliberately planted would thrive. But, as often happens on the farm, other tasks took priority. Now, we have this fine crop of young kale:
It would be faster to yank out the kale and toss it in the compost pile, but I can't bring myself to throw out good food. Which means that this week, we'll be harvesting this volunteer-edition baby kale for our customers (and maybe transplanting some -- deliberately -- into another part of the field).
Veg out,
Elizabeth
