Three Lefts #002: More & Everything

Woah

Before we get started I would like to take a minute and thank you all for subscribing! Both content & frequency are highly questionable at this stage, but I’m happy to have you guys on the ride. So massive cheers to you all – and without further ado now, as the old Hungarian saying goes: let’s slap into the ratatouille!

🙏🙌

Out Sick

I am writing this edition while miserable and in bed – trying to recover during the weekend so that next week I could leap back into my current ongoing project: helping Ramiro (of Retype fame) with his new collection, called Brutal Types.

I won’t say much at this stage to keep the buzz alive, but if you’ve seen the teasers then you’ll know what to expect. The fonts are finished, but there is still more ground to cover, so maybe keep an eye on the website – due August 5th 🧨

On A Lighter Note

I have also recently finished Adam Becker’s new-ish book, More Everything Forever, a pretty bleak outlook on how careless-yet-ignorant assholes want to force their utopian fever dreams on humanity. Not a particularily lighthearted subject.

But let me tell you: letting the actual quotes from these unbelievably rich and absurdly insecure manchildren do most of the talking is a pretty funny move at least. Because what else do we have left. ★★★★★

I read most of this book over two flights, listening to Lighter Notes by Luca Sestak. And not to toot my own horn, but I could have not picked a more perfect soundtrack if I tried.

Maybe it was the claustrophobia, or the lack of other stimuli, or all the sleep deprivation but this music with that book was one of those magical moments when everything clicks and suddenly it all makes sense.

In case you are wondering, some other albums I’ve downloaded as in-flight entertainment also include:

  • that Severance remix album that I looped god knows how many times
  • GLOW ON by Turnstile
  • both Short n' Sweet & EUSEXUA obviously
  • and Fear Of The Dawn by Jack White ← which might be the best take-off (and landing) soundtrack ever

No BRAT now, although this one time I had the most hauntingly beautiful experience listening to So I while the flight attendants were doing their choreography. Talk about happy accidents.

AMS ← TBS

By the way (and this would deserve an edition of its own), the flights in question were to and from Tbilisi – and although it was a short trip, it was enough to get lost in the city, take a punishingly hot bath, and try some of the local cuisine and beverages. All incredible. ★★★★★

Shaken Not Shuffled

When I’m on the ground (and connected to the World Wide Web) I often find myself listening to Soma FM (thanks Tony!), an online radio station that features a collection of thematically curated stations. What.

Here’s the full list, but my favorite by far is Secret Agent which features songs that sound like a subminiature Minolta hiding in your headphones.

Getting work

The main thing keeping from me leaving Instagram was the potential prospect / romantic idealisation of getting work through people flooding my DMs with opportunities. That was until I remembered that there are exactly zero commercial projects I’ve gotten this way.

But granted, I’ve also never really advertised my services through the platform. Will any of that change now with trying to break free? Probably not, because while I am always on the lookout for new projects and people to work with, I couldn’t really bring myself to put any effort into advertising or content creation otherwise.

Outro

That’s my time, thank you for reading! Subscribe if this was up your alley & you haven’t already – or check the previous editions in the archive if you’re feeling particularily noncommittal.

You may email me with whatever’s on your mind or reply to this one – but you may also submit any feedback, unsolicited advice, or factual correction via UMMactually@faebiou.com. My website is still around and I’m on Mastodon as well, if you’re into read more type-related nonsense. Or, you know, there’s that other place still.

Thank you for reading and take care!
