April's post
Hey guys,
I'm happy to announce that I will have no need for creative accounting this month. I have a real, meaty new post, and quite a substantial one at that. Like usual, what was initially supposed to be a quick job, in and out, 20-minute adventure, ballooned beyond my wildest assumptions, and I ended up writing my third-longest post so far. I guess I had a lot to say on the topic.
It details my issues with the spiritual theory according to which the purpose of life on earth is to determine whether souls go to Hell or Heaven: Contentions with Christianity: Filtering Souls (Links: Blog / Substack). .
I was unsatisfied with needing to change course abruptly and abandoning my post in progress to publish a very short one instead last month. It was better than breaking my streak, and short posts are fine when they're a conscious choice made in advance, but when they're an unforeseen last resort, I can't help but feel like I dropped the ball somewhat.
So in the last newsletter I pledged I would experiment with a different approach. I started a "mini habit" of writing at least 50 words every single day, inspired by the book How to Be an Imperfectionist by Stephen Guise and the concept of "no zero days". It seems to be working pretty well so far. It's pushed me to do a lot more writing on my phone, which is a less comfortable experience, but it is more flexible, and it allows me to carve more time for it. There's still a decent amount of room for improvement, like breaking free from scope creep, but it's a good start.
Overall, I must have been doing something right because this time around the writing process was a lot less laborious than usual for a post of this size. Up to now, I had to work on these in the background for several months before finishing them, whereas I completed this one in only three weeks (albeit I had a decent amount of notes to recycle).
In any case, I'm glad I can share this update on an upbeat note, seeing as I'm turning 30 years old today.
I hope things are going well on your end too!
