this occasional society september newsletter

Olá comrades!
this occasional society update
by the time you read this, there will be a new rough and ready ep, ‘rehearsal tape’, out. It is, as you might expect, a taster of what you’ll hear if you make it to a t.o.s. gig in the near future. It’s free / Pay what you want. You’ll can find it on Bandcamp and Mirlo.
There’s another unreleased sketch here if you want to check it out - as part of the preparation for the debut gig, I had a track that didn’t feel like it fitted so well - maybe I just didn’t like it as much as the other new material - anyway, that’s this months sketch.
the next newsletter will be with you 10.10. as ever, if you want anything included in the ‘updates from friends of the society’ section, just let us know.
updates from friends of the society
Samatha Dubs is back with a new album ‘Elgin Street Reflections’. Taking it’s title, cover and some of its sounds, from a street in central Hong Kong, it draws on a wide array of influences from breakcore and boom bap beat tapes to old school Jamaican dubs, which all hangs together beautifully.
Alpaca Festival is 12 - 14 Sept in Sheffield (UK) exploring algorithmic patterns in the creative arts through talks, workshops and music. If you can’t make it to Sheffield, the Alpaca conference will be fully accessible online 12 - 20 Sept.
Heart Baby is a new experimental electronic music label from Norway providing a home for artists including Kristoffer Lislegaard, Øy and ILKAMA, who released a track ‘easy listening’ from their upcoming album ‘Superspeed’ a few days ago.
newsletter regular, Socool, has been busy lately. To the nines, out today, has been in the works for a few years, but, despite it’s long gestation period, sounds relaxed, beautifully cohesive and surprisingly boppy. menawhile, kind:Music is an ever growing collection of tracks and remixes released through the bonkwave community.
Speaking of the genre that no-one can define, another compilation of madness is imminent. The Four Seasons of Bonkwave : A Midsummer Bonk’s Dream is being released in two parts on 11 & 18 Sept with accompanying release parties.
In other news, I’m delighted to be going to Machina Bristonica in Bristol at the end of September and Levitation 25 in Liverpool in November, but I’m gutted to not be able to get to the Woodbridge Ambient Festival in a few weeks. I’m still trying to find a way to see if I can get to Switched on in Whitby in November.
a.o.b. - things that have replenished our creative wellspring recently
As ever, the 1 of 100 ‘Liner notes’ newsletter provides a treasure trove of great stuff. I love a track teardown and this recent walk through of Aquarius by Boards of Canada 1 of 100 shared was fab!
