this occasional society september newsletter
hello friends! hoping that this newsletter finds you well.
this occasional society update
it’s been busy in ‘the pod’ but there was still time for a quick break in oxford for a few days. if you ever get the opportunity, the botantic gardens and a few laps around farmoor reservoir are both highly recommended.
by the time you read this, a new release - a holding stone - will be up on the bandcamp page - available for free / pay what you want. it feels like another small developmental step forward, which is good. hopefully you will like it.
as with other recent releases, the stems are also available to download and play with if you want them. you’ll find a link in the thank you note.
beyond that, a commitment was made to share an unvarnished, work in progress ‘music sketch’ with each newsletter for you to download if you want - this month’s sketch is here.
the next newsletter will be with you 10.10
updates from friends of the society
there’s still just about time to get to the live show by electronic artist gribbles on 12 sept in the old nick theatre as part of gainsborough voices - get free tickets for the show here.
the t.o.s. relationship with southampton’s music in the city event is a complicated one and not without issue, but, regardless of that, they give a wide array of artists their debut gigs and create space for others who would otherwise struggle to play out. it runs 28 & 29 sept - all the venues & gigs are free and the listings are here. find some artists you might like and go and support them.
just before that is the next ‘ght lates’ session on 27 sept - featuring the chateau bateau band, the diamond family archive and ginkgos in the beautiful surroundings of god’s house tower. you could also check out the exhibition (more on that below) between the acts.
further afield, there’s a lot of excitement for the upcoming levitation-24 at bedford esquires on 5 oct. hosted by the always wonderful castles in space record label and featuring t.o.s. faves loula yorke, james holden, twilight sequence and w.r.n.t.d.p. and many more. gonna be fab.
then, the week after there’s machina bristonica in bristol on 12 & 13 oct - again featuring an amazing lineup of acts including nik colk void, loula yorke(again), hainbach, surgeon and more, plus discussions and workshops. it looks totally amazing.
away from music, the new forest wayzgoose printers fair in brockenhurst on 29 sept. hosting a wide range of printmakers (hopefully including john bloor) selling original prints and printing supplies including inks, papers and letterpress type. more details are about halfway down this page.
if you want to provide an update for the next newsletter, send a message with the details, and ideally a link to more info, before 10.10
a.o.b. - things that have replenished our creative wellspring recently
‘everyone involved’ by ian giles - on at god’s house tower until 27 oct created a brilliant environment for a relaxing and informative afternoon there recently, taking it all in and mulling it over.
despite being neither a writer or a particular fan of the stephen king, something about ‘on writing’ called out from the bookshelf and sure enough, its unvarnished, ‘just get on with it’ advice has really resonated.
in terms of new music, the new releases by tayus, bunkr and delving have been on rotation.
also ‘the seventh continent’ by sounds of space project with kat turner has also been getting a lot of listens around here. combining field recordings from the antarctic with musical responses, it is really beautiful. and, in an astonishing piece of synchronicity, kat is a researcher at southampton uni.
finally, ‘the seventh continent’ would have remained, to these ears at least, undiscovered, without the amazing work and artisty of sonic explorer, musician and all round cool cat, kate bosworth and her amazing weekly dark train radio show. each show is it’s own work of art and shines a light onto so much music that you wouldn’t hear many other places. highly recommended. check it out on mixcloud.
until next time you lovely people.
