updates from friends of the society

Levitation, Castles in Space’s festival was fantastic, with a friendly vibe and a varied but consistently brilliant bill. It’s coincided with great new releases from Loula Yorke (Hydrology) and Field Lines Cartographer (Aperion Anxiety).

A Soul to Borrow by Wilks came out 31 Oct on the always great Bricolage. Managing to evoke memories of subterranean clubs of yore whilst feeling very contemporary, it’s barely been off the t.o.s. stereo since release.

Also out 31 Oct was the excellently titled Samhainbach by C.Circo. Darker and a bit more cutting than previous releases, it’s all the better for it.

Speaking of Bricolage, I’ve been lucky enough to have an early listen to Drealusions by Veelargo (out 21 Nov) and, again, it’s wonderful stuff, weaving oscillating pulses with an other worldly ambience to emotionally impacting effect.

Totally different, but equally fab, Roberta Fidora’s latest single Mover - from her upcoming EP - is another great slice of synth pop accompanied by a mind bending video.

Back on a live tip, Immersion (Malka Spigel of Minimal Compact and Colin Newman of Wire) are playing Portsmouth Wedgewood Rooms on 3 December.

Further ahead and further afield, Scanner and Cabaret Voltaire have been announced as playing Synth East in Norwich next Feb. t.o.s. will be in full effect at both.

and finally, making a late bid for my ‘album of the year’ (NB, I don’t do such lists) Sulk Rooms have a new one ‘Rewilding’ out on 5 Dec.

a.o.b. - things that have replenished our creative wellspring recently

Rather predictably, I loved the documentary about Jodrell Bank at 80 on BBC radio, hosted by Hannah Peel, and am very excited for the upcoming release with the BBC Philharmonic.

I also really enjoyed this review in The Quietus as a fantastic example of great music writing (which The Quietus excels at) making you excited to hear music that you would almost certainly not have otherwise checked out. (Also “snake bites & strychnine” is definitely a future track title)
