this occasional society july newsletter

Olá my friends!

this occasional society update

the weekly blog / diary thing and music sketches are up and running again. the society has has a few tracks played on The Camglen Express. Thanks to Stephen Paton for that. It’s a great show of electronica and is available on listen again so has become my regular Saturday morning soundtrack while gardening.

There’s another unreleased sketch here if you want to check it out. It’s a noisy one. You have been warned.

the next newsletter will be with you 8.8. as ever, if you want anything included in the ‘updates from friends of the society’ section, just let us know.

updates from friends of the society

gribbles is hitting the road again - taking the joy to Wharf Chambers in Leeds on 9 July, with DJAMTOMORROW and DUTY.

In other gigging news, Secret Nuclear is playing Weird Garden in Lincoln on 19 July in support of their great recent release Omega.

In even more live news, if you are in and around Oslo any time soon, Kristoffer Lislegaard has some gigs coming up - and if you aren’t around Oslo, you can catch them livestreaming this evening as part of the Radio Free Fedi Festival (see below).

Yes, the Radio Free Fedi Livestream Festival is now well under way - a month long streaming series in July, it features a ton of great artists including Meljoann and Control Freak. You can find out more here.

Sometime t.o.s. collaborator, James Hastings, has pulled together some of the highlights of his brilliant Strange Textures podcast, and released them as three, separate, themed albums. An Observed Earth, Heartland Captives and Everyone Everywhere are available on Mirlo and Faircamp and are well worth a listen - as ever.

Looping back round to Secret Nuclear (in a way), another of Tim’s project’s The Careful System has a three track ep of ambient, drone out on 1 August. You can pre-order now.

Indy music platform Mirlo have another fab fundraising compilation out called Double Time, with some familiar names including Luka Prinčič on it.

Speaking of cool comps, HDRF has a track of ambient loveliness on the Big Foot compilation out on Sounds for the Soul.

As if that isn’t enough, yet another great compilation, this time from the beetlecrab users group, will be out imminently here. The society is particularly looking forward to the track by MagiK, inspired by Ivy Lab’s “Left with you”

Finally, Walthamstow’s finest, Bit Cloudy has announced the upcoming release of U.S. Nadir - “a full length instrumental protest album” - on 8 August. Judging by the sound of the pre-release track, it’s going to hit the spot with a satisfying thump - so check it out.

a.o.b. - things that have replenished our creative wellspring recently

the ears have been enjoying great new music by Frequency Control Centre (dreamy BoC style wobbliness), Trium Circulorum (heavy duty dubby jungle) and Dave Clarkson as Cavendish House (experimental hauntological field recordings).

I’m also working through the latest episode of Lorenzo’s Music podcast, where he talks to Roberta Fidora about er creative process, the intersection of music and visual art, and the challenges of defining musical genres amongst other things.
