Vanport Flood Retold: When the Columbia Hit 31 Feet
On Memorial Day 1948, pilot Ralph Service circled his airplane over Vanport as the Columbia River surged to 31 feet β nearly double flood stage and the highest level ever recorded at the time. For context, the river was running at about 6 feet at Vancouver earlier this month. The Columbian's latest Clark County history feature revisits that catastrophic day and what it meant for communities on both sides of the river.
