Things I learned while looking up other things, 2022.10.11

Dear friends,

Yesterday was the anniversary of one of my favorite tweets of all time.

Some things that fall into the category of "neat thing, but great band name": desert kites, fidget knife, dolos.

News from the natural world: bumblebees are fish. The hippopotamus is over, the hyopotamus is where it's at.

I never made it to the end of Treasure Island, and somehow I don't think reading it in Latin would have helped.

I think lexical gaps are fascinating—they show us what is otherwise invisible. A new one (to me) which seems extremely salient at the moment is Adrienne Rich's observation that "Terms like 'barren' or 'childless' have been used to negate any further identity. The term 'nonfather' does not exist in any realm of social categories."

Marie Severin, the co-creator of Spider Woman, was also responsible for the art for the Spider-Man and the Hulk toilet paper.

Stay well!

Your friend,

Erin
