Things I learned while looking up other things, 2024.01.11
Dear friends,
Hope you enjoyed your second new year today (especially if you went to the burning of the Clavie). I think the practice of following several calendars at once is underrated.
"This is the response given by mereological nihilists, who hold that there are no composite wholes, only atomic simples and the various relations they bear to one another." Ever since I read that sentence (in an article on hylomorphism) I have been itching for an excuse to call someone a 'mereological nihilist'.
Helpful tips for historical novelists: not very much is known of Eliza Stafford, whose imprisonment was the cause of the Leeds Dripping Riot, making her a useful blank canvas.
Speaking of overlooked characters, why isn't there more written from the point of view of Ctimene? Or a novel featuring the prestigiateuse Eusapia Palladino, described as "vital, vulgar, amorous and a cheat"?
I'd like to make it back to Tokyo this year, not just to visit "Tokyo's most refreshing parking lot." I am definitely going to London next month for a conference, and hope to visit the Fashion and Textile Museum while I'm there. Reading a little about their current exhibit (on fabrics and propaganda) led me to thinking about other political uses of textiles, which led me to the Palestinian tatreez, which Palestinian women used to good effect to defy Israeli bans on representations of the Palestinian flag.
Your friend,
Erin
