Word of the day: Sundae, Banana Split
Sundae, Banana Split
/sun-day, buh-NAN-uh split/ · n.

1. A decadent dessert of substantial dimensions, characterized by a trio of scoops nestled between halves of a ripe banana, often further adorned with sauces, nuts, and cherries; esp. one whose toppings exhibit gravitational defiance in raking light.
2. colloq. A dish so laden with embellishments that its foundation becomes a mere suggestion.
Etymology. From banana (a tropical fruit) + split, past participle of splitten (Middle English, 'to cleave'), illustrating the division of the banana, which makes it sound like a diplomatic incident.
She presented a thiccc banana split that defied the saucer's very purpose. The ice cream scoops had no time for restraint.
