Word of the day: Bread, Sourdough Round

Bread, Sourdough Round

sor-dough ROUND · n.

Bread, Sourdough Round

1. A leavened bakery product of notable circumference, characterized by its robust crust and chewy interior, usually presented as a complete spherical unit; esp. one that, when viewed in profile, casts a shadow of considerable ambition.

2. colloq. Industrial-grade bread that refuses to fit in any standard bread box without asserting its dominance.

Etymology. From Old English 'breād', referring to a piece of bread, and from Middle English 'sour' plus 'dough', referring to the fermentation process used in its creation. The word 'round' speaks for itself, like this loaf.

She set down a thiccc sourdough round at the picnic, and suddenly the table felt inadequately supported.
