1. A floating fortress of formidable mass and breadth, designed to deploy and recover aircraft at sea; esp. one observed astern, in raking light, its vast expanse daring the horizon to match its presence.

2. colloq. The ocean's answer to a landlocked stadium, but with more firepower and less subtlety.

Etymology. From aircraft (1908, from air + craft) + carrier (late 14c., 'one who carries or conveys'), the naval variant attesting to a superlative form of buoyant audacity.

The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower cruised into Halifax Harbour, a thiccc naval aircraft carrier that redefined the term 'port of call' with its imposing tonnage.
