Sustain The Xylom on World Press Freedom Day!
Dear Reader,
In 2024, World Press Freedom Day is dedicated to the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the context of the current global environmental crisis.
We are also entering Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. Did you know that according to the CUNY Newmark J-School Center for Community Media, The Xylom is the only AAPI environmental newsroom in the United States?
As a nonprofit news organization, we do things a little differently: We translate our stories in multiple languages. We focus on topics that legacy media doesn't know how to cover or won't even try to cover. And we never place our reporting behind a paywall or next to industry ads. This also means we rely on readers to support our reporting. As we are midway through a crucial election year, that support is more important than ever.
I believe in the power of journalism to grow science with words. And whether you’re new to The Xylom or have been with us from the very beginning, you know that our nonprofit and in-depth reporting fills a critical need in our community.
The biggest boost to our work comes from monthly members (or what we like to call "sustainers"); y'all provide predictable, sustaining revenue! We need your help to meet our goal of getting ten new sustainers by the end of the day! Will you join us?
Thank you for allowing The Xylom to remain a place where independent environmental journalism can thrive.
With gratitude,
Alex Ip, Editor-in-Chief, The Xylom
