The Valuable Dev - A Practical Guide of GNU sed With Examples

Sunday Greetings, Valuable Developer

Happy new year! Hope everything's fine on your side.

I'm back this month with a guide for GNU sed. It's a useful CLI when I need to automatically edit some text. It has some commonality with some Vim Ex commands, so if you know already how to use The Best Editor in the World™, sed shouldn't be too confusing.

The CLI sed is often misunderstood. Yet, it can be very useful to edit automatically a bunch of files directly in the shell or in a script.

Updates

I'm still writing Learning to Play Vim like a madman, sinking most of my time off in it. It's going strong; I'm still hopeful to release it first quarter (half?) of 2024.

Mouseless

Here are some tools I found interesting:

  • Browsing the Internet is great, but what about automating the boring stuff, like checking your emails, directly from the shell? That's the goal of beachpatrol, using Chromium and some Paywright scripts.
  • Do you want a summary of a YouTube video in your terminal? I found the idea behind YouTube Summary CLI quite interesting.
  • sptui is a Spotify TUI player.
  • In the category useless so indispensable, running curl on https://pkmn.li/ will give you a random Pokémon in your shell.
