#002 - between worlds (2018)
hello and welcome to my weblog. tonight i watched between worlds (2018)
the whole time i just thought “well this is what the shining would be like if it were about truckers in alabama and if it were directed by someone else” and the whole time i was right
the movie presents itself from the start as a sort of ghost story. here are some people haunted by their pasts. and then the movie introduces literal ghosts. and then the movie just keeps going off the rails. it is hard to tell which scenes are “real” and which are dreams or hallucinations or premonitions or psychic visions or whatever because everything is equally unlikely and surreal.
in a scene that jumps back and forth between a flashback of nic cage’s character having sex with his wife and him having sex with a young woman his wife’s ghost has possessed, the wife/ wife ghost asks him to speak dirty to her, so he reads her poetry, mid-coitus, from a zine titled “memories by nicholas cage” which is a great name for a zine but a goddamn weird thing to put in an otherwise apparently good-faith attempt at a serious movie about ghosts and stuff starring nicholas cage.
now i’m just thinking about how “memories by nicholas cage” sounds like a celebrity fragrance from the late 1990’s
