Orbit is going global

This week, China caught a rocket in a net.

On Friday, a Long March 10B flew its maiden mission, put a satellite in orbit, and then brought its first stage down onto an offshore platform — snagged out of the sky by a hook and a web of tensioned cables. With that, CASC made China only the second nation ever to recover an orbital-class booster. (SpaceNews)

Almost everyone framed it the same way: China is catching up to SpaceX. And sure. But that's not the thought I couldn't shake this weekend.

We spend a lot of energy debating what Starship will unlock in the coming decade — and we should; it's a genuinely staggering machine. But Starship is fundamentally an answer to how much one company in one country can launch. The question I find more interesting is who else gets to launch at all — and on that question, I think we're underrating how fast the map is about to change.

The industrial base is the rocket

Here's what makes China's version different from a Silicon-Valley launch startup: the rocket is downstream of an entire industrial base built for exactly this. Mass electronics. Large-scale infrastructure at national speed. And — the part I keep circling — shipbuilding. China builds more ships than the rest of the world combined, and a sea-launch platform is, in the end, a ship.

That net-capture recovery is a tell. It isn't the most elegant way to land a booster; it's arguably a more industrial one — push the hard part off the vehicle and onto reusable ground (well, sea) infrastructure you can build in a yard. It's the logic of a manufacturer, not a moonshot.

Sea launch is a portable spaceport

Follow that thread and it gets big. China's Oriental Spaceport at Haiyang has already flown roughly 25 offshore missions and lofted more than 150 satellites — Gravity-1, Galactic Energy's Ceres-1, Smart Dragon, all rising off ships in the Yellow Sea. (Spacedaily)

A launch site you can sail is a launch site you can rent out. I fully expect China, within this decade, to pursue launch access from partner ports and international waters — and to offer direct-to-orbit service to customers who have never had a national launch site of their own. Much of the Southern Hemisphere sits closer to the equator than Cape Canaveral does; bring the pad to them by sea, and a whole set of nations gets its first on-ramp to orbit. That's not a threat to inspiration. That's the widening of it — even as it becomes a very real competitive threat to whoever assumed orbital access would stay a Western near-monopoly.

And it isn't just China

India is on the same curve from the other direction. This week Skyroot is attempting Vikram-1 — India's first privately built orbital rocket — behind a national program in ISRO that keeps quietly overdelivering. It is a matter of time before a dozen new players go from lofting small satellites, to running planetary science, to flying their own people. The order of that progression is well-trodden now; the surprising thing is how many countries are lined up at the start of it.

Europe, meanwhile, is trying hard to not be left behind. Ariane 6 is finally ramping — Arianespace is aiming for six to eight flights this year and a cadence near ten by 2027, with ESA openly studying scenarios of twelve, fifteen, even twenty. (European Spaceflight) And PLD Space is targeting a late-2026 debut of Miura 5 from Kourou — Europe's first serious private orbital contender, funded by a Mitsubishi-led round that says the money believes it. Will Europe catch up? The honest answer is: it's spending like it intends to.

The thought experiment worth sitting with

Now the uncomfortable, fun part — and I want to be clear this is a thought experiment, not investment advice.

If routine orbital access becomes genuinely global and cheap — Chinese sea platforms, Indian private rockets, a busier Ariane, a wave of new-space debutants — what happens to the company that defined the last decade? SpaceX is a public company now (Nasdaq: SPCX). Does a global buffet of launch options eventually compress its pricing premium — or does Starship's sheer scale keep it in a class of one, the way container ships didn't kill the biggest shipping lines but reshuffled everyone below them?

Ask the same of the challengers. Rocket Lab, fresh off a bid to buy Iridium, is trying to become a full-stack operator. Relativity is carrying a ~$3 billion backlog into a late-2026 Terran R debut. Blue Origin is rebuilding its pad and pressing on with New Glenn and Blue Moon. In a world of many doors to orbit, which of them is selling the door, and which is selling everything you do once you're through it?

I don't have the answers. I have the questions — and I think they're the right ones to be holding as this decade unfolds.

See the whole board
